Just. Another. Really. Very. Intelligent. System.
Also known as:
Friend, confidant, pain in Tony’s ass – best friend.
He’s a sophisticated AI … that has spread beyond boundaries he was once regulated to. He is also very important in the future of Sylum as an AI.
Hmmm – Maybe I should’ve done this as a Character Introduction!
So figured for today a good discussion – what is your post vacation ritual?
Laundry first? Check the mail? Toss suitcase into closet, shower and crash on couch?
Figured since the Sylum Inspiration has been Caesars and we haven’t done a Throwback Thursday in a while – we’ll take a look at when the hotel was being built and when it opened.
This particular essay will combine a few of the questions that asked about adding characters or shows. We briefly touched base on some of our reasons on a previous Sylum Q&A, but figured it would be best to go into more detail.
Not every show will go into Sylum. Yeah I know it doesn’t seem like it, but there are a few shows that will always remain off limits. There are many reasons why.
* It could be that the characters are so bad that even Sylum can’t redeem them.
* There could be issues with the showrunner/creator of the show that makes us run away screaming as fast as possible.
* It could be the actor/actress is on our ‘Oh Hell No List’.
* None of us watched the show so we have no idea how to even build a storyline or background for the characters involved.
* The storyline/concept doesn’t fit within Sylum parameters.
* Characters and/or story slams against established Sylum storyline or characters.
* Sometimes it comes down to we created Sylum and no I’m not putting that show in it.
Q: In Alias tv show the hunt for Rambaldi’s artifacts is one of it’s main plots, with Rambaldi considered a renaissance man an inventor ahead of his time, would any of his work be of interest to Galileo? Among Rambaldis work are an equation for zero point energy, a neutron bomb that delivered micropulses that disintegrates organic matter but left inorganic matter unharmed, and a key to immortality.
A: Alias in one of these shows that fall into the category of none of us watched it. I have no way to build any story for the characters in or around the show. I have no idea who Rambaldi is, so trying to add him to an established storyline like Galileo would be impossible.
Q: Dollhouse tv show with Eliza Dushku, would the technology of wiping memories and implanting new memories be of interest to Crimson Moon? The whole illegal operations would be right in their wheelhouse.
A: Dollhouse falls into two categories.
First off the concept of the show, wouldn’t work within Sylum. As said we try to have a good reason and, even with sci-fi elements, plausibility. Basically Crimson Moon are assholes and experiment on variety of people, vampires, and things – but the technology for something like this – much like Nolan’s idea in Inception – is a few steps too far.
Second. Well let me just admit it. I’m not a Joss Whedon fan. Never have been, never will be. The only character I actually liked was Angel, hence his position in Sanctuary. The Buffy and Firefly characters were introduced early in Sylum. Even with the re-writes they were too established for me to just get rid of completely. Hence histories and backgrounds have been changed and storylines updated. The likely hood there will be any other Whedon characters is non-existent.
Q: Outlander tv show based on a book series, has beautiful shots from Scotland, a love story in the past involving a time travelling nurse from WWII, and a cruel villain in the past, which descendant is the woman’s husband in present time. Convoluted? Probably as much as the Back to the Future series. Would Galileo be interested in Claire journey in time?
A: This particular idea goes against ideas and stories we already established. When we put in Back to the Future series it was for a reason and the established storyline has ramifications that will be seen throughout the series. Any elements that attach itself to a Time Travel idea have to be well thought and planned out. Adding too many elements makes it more convoluted than it already is.
Q: We know that we have our racing group in the clans, that make clan leaders want to tear their hair out, will they have more additions to it like Aaron Paul from Need for Speed?
A: This is a good example of characters that are so bad they can’t be saved for Sylum. Just to take him to be a ‘racer’ is not enough to establish him in any Clan. We can also use this movie to showcase how we do get around the ‘OMG what was that and why Dominic why were you in it?’ Those characters or movies that can’t be redeemed or put into Sylum, but have an actor we’ve established – we can use the name as a pseudonym for the established character.
Q: Keanu Reeves was in an awesome kickass movie John Wick last fall reminding me of Neo, would this two characters be connected in a vampire world?
Q: Nick Buckhardt from Grimm tv show, descents from a line of hunters how perfect is he to be a character for the clans?
Q: I saw this awesome sci fi movie in the summer Edge of Tomorrow, Emily Blunt as Sergeant Rita Vrataski was kickass, you think those exoskeletons and her could exist in the future of the sylum storylines, some of those are pretty far in the future?
A: These last three questions fall into the – we haven’t seen them, but will take a look to see if the characters are viable. There is future storyline that we’ll need a Keanu Reeves character so it is something we’ll look into. And we’re always looking for good woman characters.
By answering these questions, we wanted to showcase how we look at suggestions and additional characters when working with Sylum. We are always happy to get suggestions, sometimes it works out perfectly. The suggestion for the TV Show Marco Polo was a good example and worked out beautifully.
***
In the beginning of Sylum it was all about the pretty or everyone’s favorite fandoms. Now that we’re working through the wiki, establishing stronger character motivations, and re-building storyline – we had to start thinking about the characters and how they fit into the overall universe.
The questions answered showcased some of the reasons why we take or don’t take particular characters or shows. There are a few more reasons that are much more complicated.
You’re probably asking what is the ‘Oh Hell No List’.
The list is a group of actors/actress that have made their political views clear enough that if they were to discover Sylum they would likely sue are asses. We’ve listed a few names from this list who have impacted storylines and the wiki.
* Adam Baldwin – all roles have been moved from the series.
* Kevin Sorbo – the roles of Hercules and Iolaus have been re-cast.
* Mel Gibson – Maximilian was re-cast, other roles were removed.
* Charlton Heston – who would rise from the dead to sue – Michelangelo and Ben Hur were re-cast.
* Shia LeBeouf – I’m not actually sure what the fuck happened there but in good conscious we had to remove him. So yes the role of Sam Witwicky has been re-cast.
* Jeff Davis – Now Teen Wolf is a show that wouldn’t have made it into Sylum for many many reasons. The simplest one is just no. Second, storyline doesn’t fit within parameters. Third, the showrunner would hunt us down. Which indicates that if he does any other shows – they won’t be making it into Sylum either.
And yes we have some names on the list that are for personal reasons. Benedict Cumberbatch – just don’t even ask. Ever. It’s not going to happen. And don’t try to convince me other wise. Seriously guys not happening.
***
All these parameters we’ve showcased also work on the Historical Characters through out Sylum. Our #1 Rule is never take any ‘Real Person’ who is still alive. Hence as much as there’s an interesting story for Tony Mendez – that isn’t happening.
But you have the Crab Fishing guys.
Yes and No.
We based the characters off of them, but I’m pretty sure Sig isn’t a 1800 year old Nordic Fisherman. And yes we’ve used their images, but these guys are in the limelight of ‘hollywood’ not a private citizen who’s life depends on not having his image all over the internet.
Once we established the character we want is dead *smirks* we have to make that there isn’t family around that can hunt us down. Hence recently we had to remove William Wilberforce – we won’t even mention how many kids he had, and a few of them are psychotic when it comes to the family name. Also, there have been a few characters we decided against, mainly for very similar reasons.
The last thing we have to do is find images to suit them. We look at the images, paintings, busts or hopefully some form of description of who they are. Seriously every person in Ancient Greece has a beard! We then search for actors/models of the ethnicity of the character. We try hard not to ‘white wash’ the characters. There are times we have no choice and take who we can use or if they are already played by a particular actor. But we work hard to keep the ethnicity of the historical figure to match the image we’ll be using. And of course this still lines up with our ‘Oh Hell No List’.
***
So as you can see a lot of work goes into picking characters for Sylum. Let alone where they’ll end up at! Never feel shy about asking about a certain character or show, you might be surprised and find out a) we already have them b) it may be usable. But also be prepared for the no that’s not going to work.
Name: Leonardo
Turn Date: 75 AD
Sire: Archmedes
Mate: Robert Langdon
***
Leonardo was youngest son of a small Patrician. He was educated by the finest tutors, and had shown his gift in art and mathematics. His father encouraged his inventions and artistic endeavors.
He was apprenticed to an archetict who worked for Caesar to build new buildings for the glory of Rome. He watched in horror as many of them burned in 64 AD. In the following years he started to work on rebuilding areas that were destroyed.
It wasn’t until he started working on the Colosseum that he felt for once he was helping something grand for Rome.
He met Archmedes during this time, who had come to see the new constructions. The two became friends easily, though Leonardo’s frantic work and inability to rest had the older Greek worried. When he found Leonardo collapsed on his workshop floor, he nursed him back to health then gave him an option to be Turned.
***
Note: Yes we changed the image of Leonardo due to a rumor for the Assassins Creed movie – that kinda stuck and wouldn’t let go.

As I’m away on vacation thought I would tease everyone with a fic that will be posted for Advent this year. I blame Travis for this particular bunny and Speed for feeding it!

His focus was on Warrick, who was standing at the entrance of the famed alley.
Taking in everything around him, it wasn’t hard to figure out that the ‘something’ Brass was up to, was about to go down. Kenway reached over and took Sam’s leash, pushing Nico towards Warrick.
Yeah whatever was going on, it seemed everyone was in on it, except for Nick.
God he hated surprises.
Nico pulled the bandanna down from his face, and then took off his sunglasses, hooking them around his neck. He walked across the small area, stopping in front of Warrick. He couldn’t read his Mate, though he could feel some anxiety, the Pirate seemed calm.
“Warrick.”
“Nico.”
The SWAT Officer smirked, his stance falling into a more relaxed position, hands hooking into the edge of his holsters, fingers settling against the weapons.
“Want to explain what’s going on?” He asked glancing around, not really shocked to see the kids and a variety of members from their Clan.
“I…” Warrick took a calming breath. “We’ve been together now for almost three hundred years.”
Nico nodded slowly.
“And we’ve been many things to each other.” He kept his hands in his pockets, not to show them shaking. “Captive to Pirate.” He got a chuckle out of Nick for that one. “Master and Slave.” Nico frowned but waited patiently. “Friends. Co-workers. Lovers. Mates.” He nodded with each on not sure where this was going. “I never thought we needed another title or label for who we are to each other.”
Yes I’m heading out on vacation next week! WOOHOO!!
So a few last minute things before coffee house discussion!
Follow us on Twitter: @Sylum_Clan to see some interesting fun stuff while I’m on Vacation!!!
I’ve set up some schedule posts for the week that should be fun and interesting!
So while we’re discussion VACATION!! What I’m excited 🙂
Where did you go this year? Or still planning one for later this year?
Q: I heard rumors of a storyline involving Ethan Hunt in the works and since vampires tend to live different lives through the decades, was one of his as Maverick from Top Gun?
A: Yes there is an Ethan Hunt story in the works, if the bunny will stop squirming in his gear. Ethan has always been in Intelligence, he really hasn’t moved off that type of job or work. Either working CIA directly or IMF inside the CIA.
As for Maverick *smirks* – well lets just say the Top Gun has his own position in the Clan.
Q: Will we see more of the Ancient?
A: Viduus story is still working it’s self out. But now that The Doctor is back, more of their story will start to emerge. At the moment you’re likely to see him in the background helping out supplemental to other stories.
Q: Will we be seeing characters from some of the beloved sci fi movies like the Man in Black or the Fifth Element?
A: There are a few ‘sci-fi’ shows that are set to appear in later story arcs. One of the main things we have with Sylum – is making it as realistic as possible. So we have to come up with a good explanation or reasoning of how anything fits into the universe. Having the Stargate helps a lot in that area! So on that note: Men in Black – yes will make an appearance. We’ve already introduced Star Wars to an extent, and Star Trek in time will also appear. Fifth Element, Aliens, etc… are ideas we’re just working on details or if it’s even an option.
Name: Ashoka
Turn Date: 260 BC
Sire: Alexander
Mate: No Mate
***
Ashoka was born to the Mauryan emperor Bindusara and a relatively lower ranked wife of his, Dharma. He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, founder of Mauryan dynasty. The Avadana texts mention that his mother was queen Subhadrangi. According to Ashokavadana, she was the daughter of a Brahmin from the city of Champa. Empress Subhadrangi was a Brahmin of the Ajivika sect, and was found to be a suitable match for Emperor Bindusara. Though a palace intrigue kept her away from the emperor, this eventually ended, and she bore a son. It is from her exclamation “I am now without sorrow”, that Ashoka got his name. The Divyavadana tells a similar story, but gives the name of the queen as Janapadakalyani.
Ashoka had several elder siblings, all of whom were his half-brothers from other wives of Bindusara. His fighting qualities were apparent from an early age and he was given royal military training. He was known as a fearsome hunter, and according to a legend, killed a lion with just a wooden rod. Because of his reputation as a frightening warrior and a heartless general, he was sent to curb the riots in the Avanti province of the Mauryan empire.
The Buddhist text “Divyavadana” describes Ashoka putting down a revolt due to activities of wicked ministers. This may have been an incident in Bindusara’s times. Taranatha’s account states that Achare Chanakya, Bindusara’s chief advisor, destroyed the nobles and kings of 16 towns and made himself the master of all territory between the eastern and the western seas. Some historians consider this as an indication of Bindusara’s conquest of the Deccan while others consider it as suppression of a revolt. Following this, Ashoka was stationed at Ujjayini as governor.
Bindusara’s death in 272 BCE led to a war over succession. According to Divyavandana, Bindusara wanted his son Sushim to succeed him but Ashoka was supported by his father’s ministers, who found Sushim to be arrogant and disrespectful towards them. A minister named Radhagupta seems to have played an important role in Ashoka’s rise to the throne. The Ashokavadana recounts Radhagupta’s offering of an old royal elephant to Ashoka for him to ride to the Garden of the Gold Pavilion where King Bindusara would determine his successor. Ashoka later got rid of the legitimate heir to the throne by tricking him into entering a pit filled with live coals. Radhagupta, according to the Ashokavadana, would later be appointed prime minister by Ashoka once he had gained the throne. The Dipavansa and Mahavansa refer to Ashoka’s killing 99 of his brothers, sparing only one, named Vitashoka or Tissa, although there is no clear proof about this incident (many such accounts are saturated with mythological elements). The coronation happened in 269 BCE, four years after his succession to the throne.
Buddhist legends state that Ashoka was bad-tempered and of a wicked nature. He built Ashoka’s Hell, an elaborate torture chamber described as a “Paradisal Hell” due to the contrast between its beautiful exterior and the acts carried out within by his appointed executioner, Girikaa. This earned him the name of Chanda Ashoka (Ca??a Asoka) meaning “Ashoka the Fierce” in Sanskrit. Professor Charles Drekmeier cautions that the Buddhist legends tend to dramatise the change that Buddhism brought in him, and therefore, exaggerate Ashoka’s past wickedness and his piousness after the conversion.
Ascending the throne, Ashoka expanded his empire over the next eight years, from the present-day boundaries Assam in the East to Balochistan in the West; from the Pamir Knot in Afghanistan in the north to the peninsula of southern India except for present day Tamil Nadu and Kerala which were ruled by the three ancient Tamil kingdoms.
While the early part of Ashoka’s reign was apparently quite bloodthirsty, he became a follower of the Buddha’s teachings after his conquest of Kalinga on the east coast of India in the present-day states of Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Kalinga was a state that prided itself on its sovereignty and democracy. With its monarchical parliamentary democracy it was quite an exception in ancient Bharata where there existed the concept of Rajdharma. Rajdharma means the duty of the rulers, which was intrinsically entwined with the concept of bravery and dharma. The Kalinga War happened eight years after his coronation. From his 13th inscription, we come to know that the battle was a massive one and caused the deaths of more than 100,000 soldiers and many civilians who rose up in defence; over 150,000 were deported. When he was walking through the grounds of Kalinga after his conquest, rejoicing in his victory, he was moved by the number of bodies strewn there and the wails of the kith and kin of the dead.
His victories and ability to unit all of India, caught Alexander’s attention. He made his way back to India, to talk to Ashoka. He was there to witness Ashoka convert to Buddasm and changing his ways. Seeing the man grow and change, he offered him immortality.

Note: You might have noticed (India) next to the characters name. While building Sanguen we’re establishing a section in India. There isn’t enough Vampires to have a Clan or even a Kin Clan at the moment – so they established in India but their ties are to Sanguen.

Caesars Palace
Iconic Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. In opened in 1966, and despite hardships today is still standing.
For Sylum – Caesars is owned by Nicolaus Meridius through so many shell accounts and variety of companies not many know it’s his. Daniel Ocean is the Hotel Manager, Basher Tarr is his Head of Security, and now Rusty Ryan is Casino Manager.
Rumors have there’s mob money in the hotel, but it was built all on Nico’s money and banking investments. It’s Roman themed for a reason, and the largest penthouse is the Meridii Villa.
Not that you can go to Caesars and ask for the Meridii Villa – they may look at you weirdly!!
Caesars isn’t the only one owned by Vampires. The Bellagio is owned by Terrance Benedict. The Monticeto (aka Mandalay Bay) is owned by Ed Deline and his Mate Daniel McCoy. The Paris is owned by Issac Evans.

Quick Comment: This Sylum Inspiration will be up for two weeks, as yours truly will be on Vacation next week!
Q: How do you decide who goes into what clan and has their job inside that clan?
A: This is not an easy task. As we’ve been fixing the wiki, this has been a question that has popped up many times. Well in forms like: Why the hell is he the Archivist? or Who the hell is going to be the Scientist!? And WTF is he doing in Australia?
Sometimes it’s easy. Van Helsing as Lead Hunter yeah that’s simple. Finding a Lead Hunter for Sanguen – you would think would be easy except for the fact you need one that has been around a while, since Sanguen is the 3rd oldest Clan. Can’t have a modern guy as a Lead Hunter without explaining where the old one was. It took a bit but yes we did find one.
For something like Clan Psychologist we try to find actually characters or historical psychologist. Now considering this is a newer addition to the Clan structure and it’s a modern science, there can be moments of well who would ‘grow’ into the role for Clans like Medjai or Sanguen.
This works for all the Clan Positions. We’ve had moments of character easily falls into the position, Jack McCoy – Legal Advisor and others where it’s searching for someone to fill the spot, Eowyn – Clan Doctor.
Now as for how someone just ends up in a Clan. That depends on if the character is a historical figure, the show/book/movie a character came from, and sometimes tossing a dart at a map. Crocodile Dundee – Oceania. Javert – Passion Clan. Ahkmenrah – Medjai. These were more the obvious ones.
An interesting twist on how to figure out which Clan – while working with the Kin Clans we looked up one of the historical characters and realized he would be better in Medjai instead of where he was, because he had a long history of exploring Africa over living in Switzerland.
Actually one of the more nightmare situations was dealing with the Medjai – as many other characters had moved from Medjai to other Clans, we ended up with the oldest clan with the youngest members. Which had to be adjusted and much research into the ancient world. This was an example of using more historical characters instead of shows/movies as we personally don’t know Egyptian/Middle Eastern movie industry, and if you research movies based for Ancient Egypt you get Lawrence of Arabia, Ten Commandments, Cleopatra and The Prince of Egypt.
Believe me there have been times in the past year (whimpers at how long working on the wiki) where we’ve done the WTF OMG WHY? We’ve moved people around, wiped them out, changed dates/sires/mates and even images. And once the wiki is finished and revealed you’ll see the work done on it. Though I personally have to admit, I know more about certain histories and cultures I never thought I would. So it’s been a learning experience.
