Jack is the son of Emmet William Ryan, a Baltimore Police Department homicide lieutenant, and World War II veteran. The elder Ryan had served with the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division at the Battle of the Bulge. His mother, Catherine Burke Ryan, was a nurse.

After graduating from Loyola Blakefield prep school in Towson, Maryland, Ryan attended Boston College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics with a strong minor in history and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps via NROTC. While waiting for the Corps to assign him, he passed the Certified Public Accountant exam.

After officer training at Marine Corps Base Quantico, he went on to serve as a platoon commander. However, his military career was cut short at the age of 23 when his platoon’s helicopter, a CH-46 Sea Knight, crashed during a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) exercise over the Greek island of Crete. The crash badly injured Ryan’s back. U.S. Navy surgeons, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, inadequately repaired his back. This led to a lengthy recovery process, complete with a permanent disability and wearing a back brace, he left the Marines. He passed his stockbroker’s exam and took a position with Wall Street investment firm Merrill Lynch’s Baltimore office.

His parents died in a plane crash at Chicago Midway International Airport, 19 months after his crash in Crete. He developed a fear of flying that persisted for years.

While managing clients’ portfolios, he began to invest his own money, banking on a tip he had received from an uncle about the workers’ takeover of the Chicago and North Western Railway, making approximately $6 million off his $100,000 initial investment. He did so well that one of Merrill Lynch’s senior vice presidents, Joe Muller, came to Baltimore to have dinner with him, with the objective of inviting him to the firm’s New York City headquarters. Also present is Muller’s daughter Caroline, nicknamed Cathy, then a senior medical student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They immediately fall in love and get engaged. One night, while having dinner with his fiancé, Ryan throws out his back. Cathy takes him directly to Doctor Stanley Rabinowitz, professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, to be evaluated. Rabinowitz later operates on Ryan’s back and cures his chronic pain in relatively short order. Ryan subsequently persuades the government to terminate his disability checks. Cathy later becomes an ophthalmic surgeon at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins.

After creating a net worth of $8 million, Ryan left the firm after four years and enrolled at Georgetown University for doctorate courses in history. He does a brief stint at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, then accepts a position at the U.S. Naval Academy as a civilian professor of history.

Following a recommendation from Father Tim O’Riley, a Jesuit priest and Georgetown University professor, to a Central Intelligence Agency contact, Ryan is asked to work as a consultant for the Agency, although officially employed by MITRE Corporation. He agrees and spends several months at Langley, Virginia, where he writes a paper entitled “Agents and Agencies”, in which he maintains that state-sponsored terrorism is an act of war. He also invents the canary trap, a method for exposing an information leak, which involves giving different versions of a sensitive document to each of a group of suspects and seeing which version is leaked. By ensuring that each copy of the document differs slightly in its wording, if any copy is leaked then it’s possible to determine the informant’s identity.

These accomplishments come to the attention of U.S. Navy Vice Admiral James Greer, the CIA’s Deputy Director for Intelligence. The expertise of Ryan’s report, plus the application, persuades Greer to offer him a permanent job in the CIA, but Ryan declines. They soon convince him to join and his first assignment is to London as a member of a liaison group to the British Secret Intelligence Service.

It’s there he gets the information about the Red October and realizes that the captain is going to defect. He works himself onto the ship.

Little did he know how much his life would change.

While dealing with a Soviet Intelligent Agent on board, Jack is shot in the back. He laughed and cursed as he lay dying in a Russian submarine. Only to be offered another opportunity.

Leo Demidov is a World War II Hero and works for the Ministry of State Security (MGB). When he uncovers a strange and brutal series of child murders, MGB refuses to acknowledge the deaths as murders, however, because Soviet doctrine states that only capitalism creates serial killers. The son of Leo’s partner is murdered by the serial killer, and during Leo’s investigation, his wife, Raisa, is accused of being disloyal to the state. Leo suspects that his amoral and ambitious enemy in the MGB, Vasili Nikitin, is behind the charges. Leo refuses to support the accusation, and he is forced to take a demeaning militia position in the town of Volsk. Raisa accompanies him and must work as a janitor.

In Volsk Leo meets his new commander, General Nesterov. Meanwhile, Vasili calls Raisa and attempts to persuade her to leave Leo and join him in Moscow. When she refuses, Vasili orders a local MGB man to abuse her. Raisa later admits to Leo that she only agreed to marry him because she feared what would happen to her if she refused a high-ranking member of state security.

More child murder victims are discovered in Volsk, and after Leo tells Raisa that he suspects a serial killer, she decides to help his investigation. Together they convince Nesterov and his wife, Seleyse, that the deaths must be investigated as serial murder. Further investigation reveals that the killer has claimed at least 44 victims and that he is traveling the rail lines to find his targets.

Leo and Raisa travel in secret to Moscow to interview a woman who reported seeing the killer. The interview does not bear fruit, however, and to escape possible pursuit by the MGB, they seek out Raisa’s former colleague. During the meeting Raisa discovers that the colleague is an informer planning to turn them in to the MGB, and Leo kills him. Leo tells Raisa that she can leave him if she wishes, but she says that she wants to stay with him.

Leo and Raisa return to Volsk, but there they discover that Vasili and his men have pursued them for killing the informer. They are arrested and interrogated, then put on a train to a work camp. During the train ride, they are attacked by killers at the order of Vasili; after killing their assailants, Leo and Raisa jump off the train. They trek to Rostov, where the highest concentration of the serial killer’s victims has been found; they reason that the killer must work close to the rail yards there.

In the Rostov tractor factory, Leo identifies the killer by cross-referencing worker travel with the location and date of the murders. Leo and Raisa corner the killer, who surrenders to them. However, the killer is suddenly shot in the head by Vassili, who has followed Leo and Raisa. Vassili tries to execute them, but after a vicious struggle, they kill Vassili. Leo cleverly tells the MGB agents who arrive that the serial killer killed Vassili and that he then shot the killer. Because the serial killer was a POW in German camps, the MGB is able to explain away his actions as those of a Nazi agent.

Leo is reinstated in Moscow. Despite being offered a promising political position, he instead asks to create and lead a homicide division in Moscow. Leo and Raisa adopt 2 girls who were orphaned by Vassili.

Soon after he was settled, Leo was approached by Yevgeniy Onegin, who wanted to offer him another position. Leo questioned what Yevgeniy wanted, and when the man sat him down and explained all that he was to offer, he took the chance.

Nikolai Orelov is part of the Assassin Order.

He’s trained to be an Assassin, and has worked with a few of the other though stays mostly in Russia area, as he feels they need more help than anyone can provide. He isn’t loyal to Catherine or Marco, but he at least has more respect for Marco. He does what he can to help the people during the Russian Revolution but nothing to help the Romanovs. He likes Anastasia and what she accomplishes in her life, not because of who she was.

Pop Quiz: We’ve met Nikolai recently – who do we have portraying him (or playing his part)?

Raisa Demidov is the wife of one of Sila’s Hunters – Leo Demidov.  She was hesitant at first to marry him, scared what would happen if she said no.  But as time goes on, she sees the man behind the one who works for the Government.  When all hell breaks loose over a case of missing children, she stands by him.  When he’s Turned, and they realize their Mates, the two embrace the Vampire and new life.

It’s a new month so a new set of Inspiration from another Clan.  This month it’s  сила Kin Clan (Sila – is the English spelling).  We’re starting off with the new Clan Advisor for the Clan.  To give some history – Catherine isn’t an easy person to deal with, and has gotten herself on the wrong side of Alexander a few times.  After the incident with the ‘Red October’ (yes that story is in the works but not far up on the to do list at the moment) she tosses Marko and his new American Mate Ryan out of the Clan.  Anastasia pissed as hell leaves and joins Passion Kin Clan, soon after.

Well to make a long story short (too late) … (*if you get the joke you get a cookie from Wadsworth*) after a major incident which I’m not going to mention cause it is in major storyline that is coming – Alexander doesn’t give a rats ass if she thinks she is Mother Russia, re-instates Marko and places Ryan as Clan Advisor.  Jack is still not sure if Alexander did him a favor or not.

Some of you are going but wait…that’s not Jack Ryan!

No it’s not.

We couldn’t use Alec Baldwin as we limited his characters down to one – The Shadow.

Harrison Ford didn’t fit the role in the first place, nor the one we needed for Sylum

Ben Affleck was just no.

And I’m not sure what the hell that movie was with Chris Pine but it wasn’t Jack Ryan.

So he was re-casted.  Personally I would love to see Chris Pratt play the part I think he would do an awesome job and he fits many of the characteristics of the character from the books.
