Sylum Inspiration: Aragorn

Medjai: Head of Security

Aragorn was raised with the Medjai, trained to be a warrior since he was born. He was exceptionally good even from a young age.  He rose up the ranks to Captain, and when the time came he was assigned as Head Medjai Guard to the young Pharaoh Tutankhamen.

He was by the boy’s side when he took over the throne when he was ten. He treated him like a younger brother, giving him space to be a child yet push for him to learn how to lead.  He always made sure Tut heard every view point, and took time to think about everything before making judgement.  Helping him despite the pressure at a young age, how to be a good pharaoh.  And when the young man’s temper flared he had no problem smacking him across the back of the head.

Tutankhamen had known about the Medjai and some of their eternal members.  He had asked many times about what it was like to be immortal, but Aragorn couldn’t answer as he was just a warrior.

He was the one who wrote Malik and Ahkmenrah, asking them to visit, thinking the young pharaoh would enjoy talking to the once pharaoh. While the two talked, Aragorn pulled Malik aside to let him know of his fears that there was a plot against the young king. Though he had married, both children had died in infancy, giving him no heirs and he had made many enemies while changing the Egyptian religious and physical landscape.

His main concern was General Horemheb.

When Ahkmenrah informed the guards that Tut’s chariot had crashed, Aragorn got to Tut’s chambers, just as the doctor set his leg. He didn’t like the way his charge looked or the high fever.

He looked over at the two Vampires, no words needed to be spoken.

Malik took him out of the room, for Ahkmenrah could do what needed to be done.

Aragorn demanded he be Turned.

Sylum Inspiration: Drogo

Drogo is hidden away at Masyaf.   He’s the largest of all the Dragons, bigger than Draco.

(Dilios Note: I’ve not seen him to be able to tell you how big it is, but Rhys has stated Drogo’s brother was the one St. George defeated, and he remembered the Black Dragon as huge and filled the sky, with the ability to destroy armies in seconds with his fire)

He has the ability to camouflage into mountains, and mostly looks like a mountain or a crop of rocks.

Dastan has stated he has protected Masyaf, and he’s known to a few of the Assassins.  They protect him as much as he tolerates them nearby.

Sylum Inspiration: Tus

Medjai: Member

Tus was the oldest son of the Sharaman.  He had always been jealous of the kid, his father had picked up.  Dastan was able to focus on what he wanted to, hide from the politics and courts, while Tus who wanted to just be a scholar was forced into the role of heir.

After the attack again Alamut, his father disapproved of their taking the city, despite the fact he had taken the advice from their uncle Nizam.  He was happy he wouldn’t be stuck marrying the Tamina the princess, but felt as if he wasn’t being treated fairly.  After his father’s death and blame put on Dastan, everything was off.  Nothing made sense, and he his uncle’s behavior wasn’t sitting well with him.

When he brother came back, claiming his innocents, telling him about the Dagger of Time, then proceeded to prove how it worked by stabbing himself.   Tus believes him, and the two know they have to confront Nazim, only for the Hassassin to attack, giving Nazim time to kill Tus.

He doesn’t remember much afterwards, just that a man with bright eyes asked him if he wanted to stay with his brother.   He never regretted saying yes, well most days he didn’t.

Sylum Inspiration: Beatriz de Navarrete

Medjai: Hunter

Beatriz was the middle daughter of a noble family in Barcelona, Spain.   She was more interested in horses, learning how to sword fight, running around the country side, then finding a husband.

When her family found her husband, she denounced her heritage and fled.

It was luck that she had heard rumors of those who would help people in need flee the area, and with the few coins she had left was able to book passage.

The moment she met Sayyid she knew the decision to leave was the right one.

Sylum Inspiration: Sayyid al-Abbas

Medjai: Hunter

These were some of the characters that were introduced in stories from Advent.

Sayyid was raised in Morocco, whose family had been Chosen Ones for the Medjai and Integridad.   His family was influential in helping Jews and Moors flee persecution out of Spain.

In one of the raids into Spain, he was mortally wounded.  Only for his family to seek out help from Azeem asking him to save their only son.

Sayyid accepted the blessing, and knew Allah had a reason for him to live.

Sylum Inspiration: Immutef

Medjai: Doctor

Imhotep also spelled Immutef, Im-hotep, or Ii-em-Hotep meaning “the one who comes in peace, is with peace”) was an Egyptian polymath who served under the Third Dynasty king Djoser as chancellor to the pharaoh and high priest of the sun god Ra (or Re) at Heliopolis. He is considered by some to be the earliest known architect and engineer and physician in early history, though two other physicians, Hesy-Ra and Merit-Ptah, lived around the same time.

Imhotep was one of the chief officials of the Pharaoh Djoser. Egyptologists ascribe to him the design of the Pyramid of Djoser (the Step Pyramid) at Saqqara in Egypt in 2630 – 2611 BC. He may have been responsible for the first known use of columns to support a building. As an instigator of Egyptian culture, Imhotep’s idealized image lasted well into the Ptolemaic period. The Egyptian historian Manetho credited him with inventing the method of a stone-dressed building during Djoser’s reign, though he was not the first to actually build with stone. Stone walling, flooring, lintels, and jambs had appeared sporadically during the Archaic Period, though it is true that a building of the Step Pyramid’s size and made entirely out of stone had never before been constructed. Before Djoser, pharaohs were buried in mastaba tombs.

According to the encyclopedia Britannica, “The evidence afforded by Egyptian and Greek texts support the view that Imhotep’s reputation was very respected in early times … His prestige increased with the lapse of centuries and his temples in Greek times were the centers of medical teachings.”

It is Imhotep, says Sir William Osler, who was the real “Father of Medicine”, “the first figure of a physician to stand out clearly from the mists of antiquity.”

Immutef or Imhotep depending on the mood, was well known in the Medjai as a healer. When Ardeth approached him about being Turned, he accepted it, finding true immortality where he could continue studying medicine.

Sylum Inspiration: Jacob Peter Quill

Medjai: Member

Jacob grew up in a small village in Wales.  He had never known his father, and was told that he had died before he was born.  His mother had a good job as a housekeeper at a local Inn, and was always able to buy shoes and clothes for him as he grew out of them in record time.

He also received a good education, and accepted into University where he studied History with intent to become a teacher.

When his mom became ill he returned home, to take care of her taking a small teaching job at the local boys school.   After she died, he wasn’t sure what to do with himself, and then the War to end all Wars started.

He signed up instantly and found himself fighting on the front lines.  His world changed, when Steve Trevor and a ragtag group of misfits came through the trenches.  When Diana stepped out into No Man’s Land he didn’t hesitate to follow.

It would be a year later he would find Steve and Diana again, and more importantly find his father.  It was odd to meet someone who looked just like him.

He was told about the world of Vampires, and he knew this was his destiny.

Clan Location: Medjai

Clan Medjai, the oldest Clan in the series.

Though the image and main location is labeled as Cairo, truthfully no one really knows exactly where the main location for the Medjai are located.

Being the oldest Clan, they are securly hidden away in the deserts of the Egypt.  This is how they’ve kept an ancient society a secret along, with old artifacts.

Those who have lived and been a part of the Medjai know how to get to the Oasis, the rest will they have to know someone.

Of course there’s the few who tease others with the concept that … one most walk into the desert, when can’t walk anymore, keep walking and when collapse of exhaustion hope the Medjai find you.

They do have establishments outside the desert.  The main one being in Cairo.  Plus secondary homes in Morocco, Libya, and on the West Coast of Africa.

Questions, Comments?

Sylum Inspiration: Netjerikhet

Medjai: Co-Leader

Netjerikhet was born into a merchant family. His father was a baker, and he learned the trade from him. He married their neighbor’s daughter, and after his parents died he took over as baker. Tragedy struck when his wife died in childbirth, taking his son with him.

He sold the business, not truly caring about much in his life. He became an outcast, most shaking their head at him in disgust and pity.

His life changed when he was leaning against Thebes’ outer Palace wall, and the young princess skimmed down it, landing on top of him. He yelled and picked her up, holding her still as she fought screaming and yelling that she would have him killed for touching her.

He pointed out she was running away and couldn’t quite use her princess rules if she didn’t want to be one. She kicked him, he scooped her up, walked her back into the palace, into the throne room, and dumped her ass in front of Seti.

He was surrounded in less than five seconds, spears and swords at his throat. He really didn’t care if they killed him for being disrespectful. He pointed at the pissed off princess and stated that she had landed on him while trying to run away.

He brought her home.

Seti had him locked up, then asked around, discovering the tragedy that had befallen the young man. He then called his head of guards Malik, and told him that Netjerikhet was to be trained as a Medjai and guard his daughter.

Netjerikhet asked wouldn’t be nicer to kill him.  Seti liked him instantly.

For the next fifteen years he watched over the princess, Nefertiri. Everyone including Seti was surprised nothing developed between the two of them.

Netjerikhet had heard her startled gasp, and made his way onto the balcony, in time to watch as Seti confronted Anck-su-Namun. He yelled for the Medjai, but they could do nothing to stop her and Imhotep from killing the pharaoh.

When the leader of the Medjai showed up, Netjerikhet stayed with the group determined to see this through. When Imhotep was cursed and buried, his focus was purely on Ardeth. Something about the man made him curious.

When Malik informed him that in Thebes Netjerikhet was being declared a hero for dying to try and protect Nefertiri who tragically died at the hands of Imhotep’s men, he knew his life in Thebes was over.

Ardeth stated he would take them to the Medjai. Netjerikhet decided to confront the Medjai warrior, demanding to know what was going on. Part of him wished he didn’t ask.

It took him some time to get his mind not around the Vampire, but the Mates. He hadn’t committed to anyone after his wife died. And the only he had truly opened himself to was his princess.  Plus there was a lot he needed to tell Ardeth.

After a while he agreed to be Turned, and he was grateful for Ardeth for taking his time for their Mating.

He had to fight his way through the Medjai to earn their respect, but over time, he earned it.

Sylum Inspiration: Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad

Medjai Hunter: Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad

Altaïr was born to Assassin parents: a Christian mother, and a Muslim father, Umar.

While Maud died in childbirth, Umar was executed by the Saracens during the First siege of Masyaf in 1176, in retribution for him killing a Saracen nobleman. Altaïr frantically called out to his father before the execution, but was prevented from seeing his father’s death by Ahmad Sofian, the Assassin who had revealed Umar’s name to the Saracens under torture. Crushed by guilt over Umar’s death, he infiltrated Altaïr ‘s quarters some time later, apologized to Altaïr for his weakness, and committed suicide with a dagger.

Altaïr ran to Al Mualim’s quarters with haste, informing him of what had occurred. Al Mualim told Altaïr not to disclose anything about the incident to anyone – not even to Ahmad’s son Abbas, who would be shamed by the truth of his father’s death. Altaïr considered Al Mualim as more of a father figure than his own biological father, though he was aware that Al Mualim’s love was “weak and dishonest,” and agreed to do as the Mentor commanded. Altaïr and Abbas joined the Order as novices soon after, grew up together and became good friends, always at each other’s side.

One day, after noticing Abbas’ continued grief over his father’s death, Altaïr told him the truth in an effort to console him. Upon hearing it, Abbas turned over in his bed, not saying a word. The following day, the two didn’t speak to each other until Abbas asked their combat instructor Labib if they could fight with real swords, instead of the wooden practice ones. It was then that Abbas revealed his hatred of Altaïr, believing he lied about Ahmad, before attacking him in a rage.

As the two grappled, Abbas held his knife to Altaïr’s throat and yelled that Altaïr had lied about Abbas’ father to shame him. The commotion caught the attention of the other Assassins, the villagers and Al Mualim himself. Trying to quell Abbas’ anger, Altaïr falsely admitted that he had lied, and the two were taken to Masyaf’s dungeon. There they spent a month in confinement before resuming their training. With his crimes deemed more severe, Abbas was forced by Al Mualim to spend an extra year in training, whilst Altaïr graduated to the rank of Assassin.

By the following year, the Holy Land was in the midst of war. In early 1191, Altaïr and his comrades Malik and Kadar Al-Sayf were tasked with retrieving an artifact from the Templars in the Jerusalem Vault beneath the remains of Solomon’s Temple. While progressing through the catacombs, Altaïr broke the first tenet of the Assassin’s Creed by killing an innocent man in their path. Malik admonished Altaïr for his recklessness, but Altaïr arrogantly dismissed him.

Upon seeing the archenemy of his Order, Robert de Sable, Altaïr broke the second tenet of the Creed by confronting his enemy directly. Attempting to openly slay the Grand Master, Altaïr was easily thwarted and thrown from the temple, leaving Malik and Kadar alone with the Templars. Altaïr escaped from the temple and returned to Masyaf to report his failure to the Order.

Once the attack was over, the matter of Altaïr ‘s actions in Solomon’s Temple was addressed once again. It was decreed that in breaking all three tenets of the Creed—as his actions brought the Templars to Masyaf and endangered the Brotherhood Altaïr was marked as a traitor to the Assassins. After declaring his judgement to the entire Order, Al Mualim stabbed Altaïr in the stomach with a dagger.

Altaïr awoke from his “sleep of the dead” and questioned Al Mualim about his survival, with the Mentor answering that Altaïr had only seen what he had wanted him to see. He then stripped Altaïr of his rank and possessions before offering him a chance at redemption, tasking him with hunting down the traitor within Masyaf who had allowed the Templars entrance. Once Altaïr successfully completed the mission, he returned to Al Mualim and was rewarded with the restoration of his Hidden Blade and sword. An official member of the Order once again, Altaïr was offered a trade: assassinate nine men from the ranks of both Saracens and Crusaders, taking their lives in exchange for his own.

Altaïr was able to assassinate the first eight and discovered that his last target was Robert himself. He made his way back to Jerusalem where he met Robert. However, as he removed the helmet of the Templar, he found out that he had not faced Robert but a girl. He allowed her to live and she told him that Robert had made his way to Arsuf. Altaïr followed and finally killed Robert, who revealed that Al Mualim was actually a Templar. Altaïr returned to Masyaf, where Al Mualim confirmed what Robert had said. Altaïr , aided by a number of other Assassins, fought his way to Al Mualim, who had used to the artifact from Solomon’s Temple to enslave the people of Masyaf. Altaïr and his mentor battled each other and Altaïr finally killed him, taking his place as mentor.

(Dilios Note: The artifact is a well kept secret I’ve heard it called ‘the apple’ from time to time but I have not seen it or can I verify it’s existence)

It was at this time Dastan arrived back at Masyaf wondering what had happened. Altaïr told him of Al Mualim’s betrayal. Dastan settled back into Masyaf, and with Altaïr ‘s help rebuilt the Assassin Order.

He set out to find Maria Thorpe ,the woman who had disguised herself as Robert de Sable, and bring her back with him. When returning to Masyaf he married her and in time she bore him a son Darim. A few years later she became pregnant with Sef. It was during her pregnancy that she lashed out at Altaïr . He missed his footing and fell off one of the towers, landing several feet below.

Dastan knew the Assassin Order needed Altaïr, and Turned him.

Sylum Inspiration: Achilles

Medjai: Deceased

Achilles was the son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons. Zeus and Poseidon had been rivals for the hand of Thetis until Prometheus, the fore-thinker, warned Zeus of a prophecy that Thetis would bear a son greater than his father. For this reason, the two gods withdrew their pursuit, and had her wed Peleus.

As with most mythology, there is a tale which offers an alternative version of these events: in Argonautica Zeus’ sister and wife Hera alludes to Thetis’ chaste resistance to the advances of Zeus, that Thetis was so loyal to Hera’s marriage bond that she coolly rejected him. Thetis, although a daughter of the sea-god Nereus, was also brought up by Hera, further explaining her resistance to the advances of Zeus.

According to the Achilleid, written by Statius in the 1st century AD, and to no surviving previous sources, when Achilles was born Thetis tried to make him immortal, by dipping him in the river Styx. However, he was left vulnerable at the part of the body by which she held him, his heel. It is not clear if this version of events was known earlier. In another version of this story, Thetis anointed the boy in ambrosia and put him on top of a fire, to burn away the mortal parts of his body. She was interrupted by Peleus and abandoned both father and son in a rage.

Only myth and legend has survived over the years for where Achilles comes from, and most of that is from Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey – which was encouraged by Odysseus.

For more information about Achilles please see Vampire Council Library

Achilles had always been quick, easily healed, and an agile fighter. He caught Perseus’s eye while fighting against mercenaries who were threatening a small village. Perseus swooped in to help the young warrior only to get chewed out for not letting him finish what he was doing. The two became fast friends, and when Perseus told him the truth of his nature, Achilles asked to be Turned.

Sylum Inspiration: Ardeth Bay

Medjai: Clan Leader

As long as there have been Medjai, Ardeth has been their commander.  He doesn’t talk about his life before he met Viduus, jokingly stated he doesn’t remember that far back.

When asked, Viduus will tell you that Ardeth was a good man, a good negotiator, and always took care of those he loved.

(Dilios Note: Rick pointed out – nothing has changed over the years)

Sylum Inspiration: Diana Prince

Diana isn’t a Vampire.  She is from the Asgardian Realm, specifically Themyscira.  She was raised by her mother, Hippolyta and her aunt General Antiope.  Diana became one of the fieriest fighters and trained diplomat.

Though she always felt as if she was missing something or meant for more.

Then suddenly through the biofrost, a bi-plane crashed into the ocean.  Without hesitation she dived into the waters and saved the pilot.  She learned about Earth, and the war to end all worlds.

She knew she had to go back with Steve Trevor to help.  She felt as if this was her calling.

Diana went back with Steve, and followed him to the front to try and stop Ludendorff from destroying the Armistice.  Instead she ended up facing off with Sir Patrick Morgan, who was playing both sides to the middle.

To discover, he was one of Loki’s.

In the mist of fighting him, she watched in horror as Steve Trevor’s plane was destroyed – she then understood his comment ‘I’ll save the Day – You save the world’.

She then finally understood human love and loss.

After destroying Morgan, she returned back to London with Steve’s friends, determined to stay with the humans, fight for them.  For love.

A month later she ended up confronting Jacob Frye and John Rhys, who had a message for her.  She traveled with them to Egypt, where she discovered Steve was still alive.

They explained about Vampires and Clans, and that Steve had been Turned.  He explained she was his Mate, but do to her physiology couldn’t be Turned.  But also because of her physiology she was merely immortal on Earth.

They both ended up staying with the Medjai, working with Henenu aka Henry Jekyll.

Her fondest memory is taking Steven back to Themyscira, where he was trained to fight with her.  Even Antiope had given him some admiration even if it was grudgingly.

Today they live between Paris, where Diana works at the Lourve, and Cairo.  Steve plays her assistant, hiding his spying easily.

Sylum Inspiration: Pocahontas

Medjai: Member

What is left out of the history books, is the fact while Pocahontas was in England, she met Gwenhwyfar.  The two bonded quickly, and when Pocahontas became ill, she came to her side and asked if she wanted to be Turned.

She decided that this was her next journey.

Knowing she could not stay in England or return to her people, she seized the adventure and left to visit the oldest of Vampires to learn more about different cultures and tribes.

She soon became great friends with many of the Medjai tribe, and found her Mate in Immutef.  They both have related to how their lives and names have more myth than reality.  She decided to stay with the Medjai, swearing loyalty to Ardeth.  With help from Scheherazade she wrote her peoples stories and language down.

Today she works in education, teaching children about all cultures and is an adamant speaker for aborigine, first nations, and native rights.
