Sylum Inspiration: Álvaro de Bazán

Integridad: Hunter

Álvaro de Bazán was born in Granada, southern Spain.

His grandfather, Álvaro de Bazán, took part in the conquest of Granada in 1492, and his father, Álvaro de Bazán the Elder, took part together with Giovanni Andrea Doria and others marines in the recapture of Tunis in 1535, and was distinguished in the service of Charles V, by whom he was made general of the galleys or commander-in-chief of the Spanish naval forces in the Mediterranean.

The future admiral followed his father in his youth, and was employed in the high command of the Spanish navy at a very early age. At the age of eight he was appointed “Military Governor and captain of the fortress and city of Gibraltar”. His command however was via his father who was in commands of the galleys of Spain. It has been speculated that this unusual appointment was intended to show Charles V’s confidence but the commander of the galleys did not share that confidence and he suggested to no effect that Gibraltar’s Line Wall Curtain be extended to the southern tip of the rock. He was a member of the Military Order of Santiago (St. James). In 1564, he aided in the capture of Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, and commanded the division of galleys employed to blockade Tetuan, and to suppress the piracy carried on from that port. The service is said to have been successfully performed. Bazán certainly earned the confidence of Philip II, by whom he was appointed to command the galleys of Naples in 1568. This post brought him into close relations with John of Austria, when the Holy League was formed against the Turks in 1570.

During the operations which preceded and followed the Battle of Lepanto, Bazán was always in favor of the more energetic course. In the battle he commanded the reserve division, and his prompt energy averted a disaster when Uluj Ali, who commanded the left wing of the Turks, outmaneuvered the commander of the Christian right, Gian Andrea Doria, the nephew of his old comrade Andrea Doria, and broke the Allied line. He accompanied Don John of Austria at the taking of Tunis in the following year.

When Philip II enforced his claim as heir to the crown of Portugal in 1580–1581, Santa Cruz held a naval command. But António, Prior of Crato, an illegitimate representative of the former Portuguese royal family, who conducted some popular resistance to the crowning of what was seen as a foreign king, continued to hold the islands of the Azores. António was supported by a number of French adventurers under Philip Strozzi, a Florentine exile in the service of France. Santa Cruz was sent as “Admiral of the Ocean” to drive the pretender and his friends away in 1582. Badly outnumbered, he won the Battle of Ponta Delgada off Terceira Island against a loose confederation of Portuguese, French, English and Dutch adventurers and privateers, which decided the struggle for the Azores in favor of the Spanish Habsburgs.

Santa Cruz, who recognized that England presented a grave threat to Spain’s empire, became a zealous advocate of war. A letter written by him to King Philip from Angra do Heroísmo in Terceira, on August 9, 1583, contains the first definite suggestion of the Spanish Armada.

Santa Cruz himself was to have commanded. His plans, schemes and estimates occupy a conspicuous place in the documents concerning the Armada collected by Don Cesário Duro. The hesitating character of the king, and his many embarrassments, political and financial, caused many delays, and left Santa Cruz unable to act with effect. He was at Lisbon without the means of fitting out his fleet, when Francis Drake burnt the Spanish ships at Cádiz during his 1587 expedition. The independence of judgment shown by Santa Cruz ended by offending the king, and he was held responsible for the failures and delays which were the result of the bad management of his master. His death, which occurred on February 9, 1588 at Lisbon, was said to have been hastened by the unjustified reproaches of the king.

Calleigh Duquesne was born in South Carolina and was raised in a good Southern family, or so her momma made everyone believe. Her father was a drunk, and an asshole, which finally came to an end when he was killed in a car accident when she was sixteen.

After graduating High School she went to Charleston University, graduated with a degree in Physics. She started working in Charleston PD, earning the name Bullet Girl from her expertise in firearms.

She was recruited by Horatio Caine for the Miami-Dade Forensics Lab. She was the new girl along with Eric Delko, who had also been recruited into the lab after Megan Donner left. She wasn’t sure how to handle the one veteran, Timothy Speedle.

Overtime the team solidified nicely together and she felt as if she found a family. It all came crashing down when Speed was shot and killed in the line of duty. Only to find out that he was a Vampire.

Soon she found herself in a Clan War and dealing with all types of Vampires.  It was the first time she met Diego.

Later she was told that she was his Mate. Only to discover that he was drastically injured and had gone home to Spain to recuperate.

Calleigh stayed in Miami, even after Horatio and Speed moved to New Orleans. She worked with Mac and Danny, and then soon became friends with Michael, Sam and Fi. It was finally after she learned all that happened in Rome, that she took a Spaniard by the horns and gave him one option take what was his or don’t.

He wasn’t that stupid.

Javier keeps mostly to himself. He swore loyalty to Azeem and used his skills as a Hunter. In time he also works with Andrew Kiernan in jobs that need to be taken care of.

Javier moved to the New World in the late 1700’s. He knew Benoit from traveling around Europe and knew the new Clan Leader would need Hunters.

At the moment he works as a New York Police Detective, keeping an eye on the Castle family as a favor to Mal.

He wasn’t quite sure what to make of the small Irish Detective, who became his partner.  There had been many times in his life he hadn’t felt he deserved at Mate, but Kevin kept him grounded.

After Michael Westen disrupted their life and introduced Kevin to the MacManus and Vampires, Javier knew he was going to have to tell him everything.  So when Ryan returned from Ireland, he sat him down and told him things he never told anyone.

Kevin took it with the dignity and calm that he had always associated with him.

He Turned him the next weekend, and makes sure to treat him like he deserves to be treated.

Sylum Inspiration: Arbaaz Mir

Sanguen Vitae: Hunter (India)

Arbaaz Mir was born in Kashmir in northwestern India during the early 19th century to a Muslim family. His home region was conquered by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire in 1819, leading to the death of numerous Muslims in Kashmir, including some of Arbaaz’s kin.  This led Arbaaz to grow up with a resentment towards Singh, considering him a cold-blooded killer.

His revenge led him to go after Singh only to be thwarted by Assassins. He was taken from India and handed over to Dastan and Altair. Both saw potential in him, but also his anger.  They worked to train him, and in time they watched him grow into a steady Assassin.

Dastan escorted him back to India, hearing rumors about his old enemy, the Hassassin. When they arrived he discovered that Templars were using the British Government to influence the Maharaja so they could control the land and wealth.

Arbaaz had to face his own emotions when coming face to face with Singh.

He realized they were trying to poison the Maharaja, and he focused on his duty knocking the tea out of his hand, instead of watching him die – but it was already too late.  The Templar escaped but Arbaaz stayed with the Singh, and told him he forgave him.

Ranjit smiled and died peacefully.

Arbaaz barely had time to react when the Templar returned.  He defected the blow, but ended up with a mortal wound before he gave the killing blow.

Dastan found him and gave him a new chance.

Sanguen Vitae: Hunter

He woke up alone in the desert. He feels weird, but is surprised he is alive. A thirst rages through him but he knows he has to get to the site to reveal the truth abut Nizam, and save Tamina.

He returns to Alamut to reveal the truth about Nizam and the Dagger to Tus. The dagger is being guarded by, The Hassassin. Dastan confronts him, who then asks how life is for the undead. Dastan ignores him and confronts Tus and explains the dagger’s mechanics to him and then stabs the dagger into his heart, killing himself; Tus brings Dastan back to life by rewinding time and realizes his brother has been innocent all along. Soon after, however, Nizam arrives and kills Tus, leaving The Hassassin to kill Dastan.

The Hassassin, bored with the situation, leaves Dastan to his fate, disappearing.

Dastan along with Tamina confront Nizam about the dagger, that it’s only to fix one moment in time. It doesn’t go back further. He refuses to believe him, and holds down the mechanism only to be transported to the moment when the two entered the room.

He screams in fury and slams the dagger into Tamina, as he turns to run, his hand is grabbed and the dagger pulled from him. Dastan demands they save Tamina. The man dressed in Medjai clothing, shakes his head, saying Dastan has only the power to save her now.

Dastan holds her to him, not sure what he means but acts on instincts. Fangs he had no idea he had dropped, she smiled at him stating, she knew their destinies were intertwined.

As Tamina recouped he learned that the Medjai was Ardeth Bay, and he had heard of Nizam’s schemes and had come with his men to help the city of Amulet, arriving too late. He explained about Vampires and Mates. He along with his own Mate, Rick, stayed in the city while Dastan and Tamina began to rebuild it.

They secured the Dagger into a vault, hoping to keep its secrets from the history books. Over the years it has only become legend.

It was Ardeth who explained who Dastan’s father was. That The Hassassin was right, he was the last of the Assassins. There had been families that wore the title of Assassin, born and raised through the Egyptian courts, trained by Medjai.

Dastan is the last.

He takes him to Masyaf, showing him where their old establishment was. Dastan was disgusted at what the order of Hassassins had done to it.

He swore then to rebuild it.

He would not be the last.

It took some time with the help of Tamina, watching over both cities. They trained as Hunters, and Dastan continued on to enhance his skills for an Assassin.

Over the centuries he built up Masyaf and the order.

(Dilios Note: Not that I know much of this *shifty look*)

They both Hunt for Alexander and Ardeth when need be, but both Clan leaders know Dastan’s focus is on Masyaf.

The one time he did leave someone in charge it all went to shit and Altaïr still hasn’t quite forgiven him for that fuck up. After settling back in Masyaf, Dastan watches as Altaïr deals with his wife and child. When Darim comes screaming to him for help, he discovers Altaïr has been gravely injured. He offers to Turn him.

Over the centuries he’s left Masyaf in Altair’s hands, so he could focus on hunting The Hassassin.

When he is at Masyaf he has no problem with Tamina hunting with Wilhelm – or their relationship. Though he’s made sure Wilhelm knows why he’s the leader of the Assassins.

He watched from the sidelines with Ezio and Altaïr, amazed at the Italian’s skills.

He’s trained many who have gone to Masyaf and sent them back into the field. When he had heard rumors of The Hassassin in India, he traveled back with Arbaaz. He watched as the new Assassin confronted his own issues, but ended up facing his own death.

Today he splits his time between Masyaf and Greece, and he’s thankful for modern technology as it’s easier to communicate between the two locations.

Ardeth explains all about Vampires and also the Assasins. Tamina encourages Dastan to find more on his heritage, and stands with him as they are trained as Hunters.

She’s with him while he rebuilds Masyaf. Over time she starts to build a section of Masyaf for families, and later training grounds for woman Assassins.

Not an Assassin herself, she learns to Hunt on her own. She meets Wilhelm and the two begin to Hunt together. She develops a good relationship with him, though she’s pretty sure Dastan has warned Wilhelm a few times about when too much is too much.

Wilhelm still hasn’t forgiven her for the Hansel and Gretel moment. For that matter neither has Hansel and Gretel.

He ended up hired to help find a ‘criminal’ in the black forest as he was one of the few who could navigate through the woods and not get lost.

When he found the criminal, he was shocked it was a ten-year-old girl. Taking her into his care, he evaded other guards and took her to where he knew she would be safe.

When they got to the edge he screamed for her to run and held off the soldiers. As he fell, he saw arrows taking each down one by one. When his savior asked him if he wanted to live.

He wanted to say no to go this his wife and child, but instead said yes.

William Tell is the Lead Hunter for Weisheit and works with Wilhelm Brandenstein to patrol the Ehre/Weisheit Territory.

***

Several accounts of the Tell legend exist. The earliest sources give an account of the apple shot, Tell’s escape, and the ensuing rebellion. The assassination of Gessler is not mentioned in the Tellen lied but is already present in the White Book of Sarnen account.

The legend as told by Tschudi essentially follows the account in the White Book, but adds further detail, such as Tell’s given name William, his being from Bürglen, and the precise date of the apple-shot of 18 November 1307.

William Tell was known as a strong man, a mountain climber, and an expert shot with the crossbow. In his time, the Habsburg emperors of Austria were seeking to dominate Uri and Tell became one of the conspirators of Werner Stauffacher vowing to resist Habsburg rule. Gessler, the newly appointed Austrian Vogt of Altdorf, raised a pole under the village linden tree, hung his hat on top of it, and demanded that all the townsfolk bow before the hat.

On 18 November 1307, Tell visited Altdorf with his young son and passed by the hat, publicly refusing to bow to it, and so was arrested. Gessler—intrigued by Tell’s famed marksmanship yet resentful of his defiance—devised a cruel punishment: Tell and his son would be executed, but he could redeem his life by shooting an apple off the head of his son, Walter, in a single attempt. Tell split the apple with a bolt from his crossbow.

But Gessler noticed that Tell had removed two crossbow bolts from his quiver, not one. Before releasing him, he asked why. Tell was reluctant to reply, but after Gessler promised he would not attempt to kill him, he replied that if he had killed his son, he would have used the second bolt on Gessler himself. Gessler was angered and had Tell bound, saying that while he had promised to spare his life, he would imprison Tell for the remainder of the life he had been granted.

Tell was brought to Gessler’s boat to be taken to the dungeon in his castle at Küssnacht. But, as a storm broke on Lake Lucerne, the soldiers were afraid that their boat would founder, and they begged Gessler to allow them to remove Tell’s shackles so he could steer the boat and save them. Gessler agreed, and Tell used the opportunity to escape, leaping from the boat at the rocky site now (and already in the White Book) known as the Tellsplatte (“Tell’s slab”), since the 16th century the site of a memorial chapel.  Tell ran cross-country to Küssnacht. As Gessler arrived, Tell assassinated him with the second crossbow bolt along a stretch of the road cut through the rock between Immensee and Küssnacht, now known as the Hohle Gasse. Tell’s blow for liberty sparked a rebellion in which he played a leading part, leading to the formation of the Swiss Confederation

According to Tschudi, Tell fought again against Austria in the 1315 Battle of Morgarten. Tschudi also has an account of Tell’s death in 1354, according to which he was killed trying to save a child from drowning in the Schächenbach river in Uri.

Wilhelm was disappointed that his wife wasn’t his Mate, but he lived a good life with her. He watched his daughter grow up, get married, have kids of her own. In time he stepped away and took his place as Wenceslaus’ Hunter, his main job still that of protecting Cinderella.

It was her that encouraged him to enter competitions with his bow and arrow. And where he ended up meeting Cougar and Robin. Though they tease each other greatly who’s the best, Wilhelm is thankful for the friends who would be at his side when need be.

He met Tamara not soon after his daughter had died, surrounded by her grandchildren. She took him hunting for a group of Rogues, and since then they’ve become an unlikely hunting pair. (Dilios Note: Ask them about the Hansel and Gretel)

He still snickers over the Turning of William Tell, though he refuses to admit what led to his Turning exactly.

On one of their adventures they end up Hunting a Rogue in Russia, where they meet Nikolai.  When Nikolai was injured in the raid against the Rogues, Wilhelm Turned him, and they agreed to send him to Masyaf.

The moment Wilhelm meets The Huntsmen he likes the guy instantly. He recruits him for the Guard and in time, he decides to give him the option of being Turned. The Huntsmen took his time to think about it, but in time agreed to be Turned.

This gave Wilhelm more opportunity to travel and conduct further Hunts, knowing that his Childe can protect the Clan while he is away.

Over the years he’s taken a variety of names, including being called Hawkeye by Cougar and Robin. He’s worked for a variety of agencies including MI:6, IMF and CIA.

He was a bit shocked to find is dear wife’s soul staring back at him through the eyes of Ethan Hunt, but over time the two have worked very well together.

Only thing he can do is glare at Ethan for laughing.
