Nothing is True. Everything is Connected.

Sylum Inspiration: Perseus

Vampire Council: Hunter

There is a lot of myth and legend surrounding Perseus’ life.

Perseus was the son of Zeus and Danaë, who by her very name, was the archetype of all the Danaans.  Danaë was the daughter of Acrisius, King of Argos. Disappointed by his lack of luck in having a son, Acrisius consulted the oracle at Delphi, who warned him that he would one day be killed by his daughter’s son with Zeus. In order to keep Danaë childless, Acrisius imprisoned her in a bronze chamber, open to the sky, in the courtyard of his palace:   This mytheme is also connected to Ares, Oenopion, Eurystheus, etc. Zeus came to her in the form of a shower of gold, and impregnated her. Soon after, their child was born; Perseus—”Perseus Eurymedon, for his mother gave him this name as well” (Apollonius of Rhodes, Argonautica IV).

Fearful for his future, but unwilling to provoke the wrath of the gods by killing the offspring of Zeus and his daughter, Acrisius cast the two into the sea in a wooden chest. Danaë’s fearful prayer, made while afloat in the darkness, has been expressed by the poet Simonides of Ceos. Mother and child washed ashore on the island of Serifos, where they were taken in by the fisherman Dictys (“fishing net”), who raised the boy to manhood. The brother of Dictys was Polydectes (“he who receives/welcomes many”), the king of the island.

More on the Myth see the Vampire Council Library.

Some of the myth is true, his mother was Danaë; his father though is unknown.  Her husband Acrisius threw mother and son into the sea, and they were found by Dictys, and only Perseus survived.  He was raised to be a fisherman, content with life, until the war between two kingdoms destroyed his home, killing his family.

He made his way to Aethiopia, where he fell in love with Andromeda.  The king offered his daughter’s hand if he was to slay the rival king, and bring back the queen’s head.  The journey faced many challenges, but when he returned he discovered that Andromeda had married another.  Legend has it he tossed the queen’s head at the family’s feet, turning them to stone.

The truth is he pretty much destroyed the city on his way out.

He set out to take up his father’s craft when he met Methos, who offered him another opportunity.

Sylum Inspiration: Li Shang

Vampire Council: Hunter

Li Shang was the oldest of a Noble family.  The moment he could he joined the army, and made up his way to General.  His focus was on honor of his family, his country, and his men.

When a new recruit had shown up he kept an eye on him, thinking the young man was small and not built for war.  As the years progressed he was impressed with the soldier’s strength and dedication.

When it was discovered by the Emperor that the young man was actually Hua Mulan, a woman, Li Shang had been mortified and laughed all at the same time. He refused to be in the city when she was executed.

It was months later he heard of rumors that a friend of Mulan’s family had helped her escape.

Following his heart, he went to her family’s estate.

Love and pride filled him when she raised her sword to defend her family.  He assured her that he was not there to harm, but asking her father for her hand in marriage.

The disgusted look on her face when her father had said yes still brings a smile to his face.

During the courtship he discovered how she truly escaped execution, and what he meant to her.  She made sure he realized she would bear him no children.

Li Shang knew his destiny lay with her.

They were married, and soon after he was Turned and they Bonded.

Sylum Inspiration: Kirill

Vampire Council: Hunter

Kirill grew up under Mongolian control, though he rarely saw or felt the oppression. His parents worked hard, owned land and made sure he would have a better life. When he would ask about his family heritage, as his coloring was darker than most, they assured him he came from a long line of good Prussians.

Not one for farming, Kirill set out for the coast, where he ended up meeting Marco Ramius. He thought him an old man who knew nothing but fishing. In time he learned Marco was more than what he seemed.

Neither man was shocked when he requested to be Turned.

Sylum Inspiration: Maximus Decimus Meridius

Vampire Council: Lead Hunter

Maximus was raised on a small farm outside Trujillo, Spain.  His father taught him the love of Earth and Horses.  When he was a young man he saw another having trouble with too large of a horse, and he moves into help without thought.  With his training and love for horses, he is able to calm the animal down and comes to the attention of  Emperor Marcus Aurelius.  Commodus offers Maximus a position in his army.

Maximus takes the opportunity  and joins the Roman Army.

His own skills and the favors from Marcus Aurelius has him moving up the ranks to General of Felix Legions and Commander of the Armies of the North.

On one of his trips home to Trujillo, his father found him a wife, a local woman named Elena.  Maximus courted her properly, soon falling in love with her easily.  The two married, and before he returned back to his army, he discovered she was carrying his child.   Eight months later he celebrated with his men, the fact he had a son, Alejandro.

In 180 AD, General Maximus Decimus Meridius leads the Roman army to a decisive victory against the Germanic tribes on the frontier, ending a long war on the Roman frontier and winning the favor of elderly Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The emperor is already old and dying, and although he has a son, Commodus, he asks Maximus to succeed him as a regent and turn Rome back into a republic. The emperor speaks with Commodus afterwards and explains his decision, but Commodus reacts by killing him and claiming the throne.

Still in Germania, Maximus is confronted by Commodus, but suspects foul play and refuses to pledge loyalty. General Quintus, captain of the Praetorian Guard and a friend to Maximus, chooses to follow Commodus. He obeys Commodus’s orders and reluctantly sends men to Spain to kill Maximus’s wife and son. Maximus manages to escape his own execution by Praetorians and races back to his home in Spain, but he finds his wife and son already dead. He buries them and collapses. A slave caravan passes by and captures Maximus, assuming that he is a deserter. Maximus is taken to Zucchabar in Roman Africa and sold to a man named Proximo, who uses him as a gladiator.

Proximo, not wanting to lose his most valuable asset, Turns Maximus after one fight where he was injured.

Sylum Inspiration: Patrick McKenna

Camelot: Member

Patrick was born in 1966AD, in Armagh, Northern Ireland to Mary Ann McKenna, a former Nun.  His biological father is unknown.

She raised him to be a devout Catholic, attending Mass every day of his life, and teaching him that God loved him, and He had a destiny waiting for him.

When he was six years old, he lost his mother in a UVF bombing at Armagh Cathedral – a protest against the visit by a Titular Archbishop on an Apostolic Mission from the Vatican, who had come to Ireland to try and broker peace.  The boy’s survival saw him labelled as ‘The Little Miracle of Saint Patrick’.

The Archbishop took Patrick back with him to Italy, formally adopting him, stating that he would raise the boy in God’s Church.

Patrick had the Vatican as his playground and school yard.  He remembered most fondly the Vatican Police officer who usually caught him running from the Nuns and dragged him back to his studies.

As he got older, he found himself talking with that same officer for hours, looking to him for wisdom and companionship.

Though he didn’t have to, when he was 18 he demanded that he follow through with his National Service to the Italian Military.  Though he never learned to use a gun, he excelled at flying helicopters.  Patrick never told the Vatican Police Officer, that he knew it was him who had made sure Patrick was safe during those two years.

When he returned, he dedicated his life to the Church, going through Seminary and becoming a Priest.  When his ‘father’ became Pope, he took the position as Camerlengo – much to the dismay of many older men in the Church who had sought the position for themselves.

He was proud to see his friend go on to become Inspector General of Vatican Police.

When his father suddenly died, he was devastated.

The night of Conclave 2006AD, everything changed.

Sylum Inspiration: Arbaaz Mir

Sanguen Vitae: Hunter (India)

Arbaaz Mir was born in Kashmir in northwestern India during the early 19th century to a Muslim family. His home region was conquered by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire in 1819, leading to the death of numerous Muslims in Kashmir, including some of Arbaaz’s kin.  This led Arbaaz to grow up with a resentment towards Singh, considering him a cold-blooded killer.

His revenge led him to go after Singh only to be thwarted by Assassins. He was taken from India and handed over to Dastan and Altair. Both saw potential in him, but also his anger.  They worked to train him, and in time they watched him grow into a steady Assassin.

Dastan escorted him back to India, hearing rumors about his old enemy, the Hassassin. When they arrived he discovered that Templars were using the British Government to influence the Maharaja so they could control the land and wealth.

Arbaaz had to face his own emotions when coming face to face with Singh.

He realized they were trying to poison the Maharaja, and he focused on his duty knocking the tea out of his hand, instead of watching him die – but it was already too late.  The Templar escaped but Arbaaz stayed with the Singh, and told him he forgave him.

Ranjit smiled and died peacefully.

Arbaaz barely had time to react when the Templar returned.  He defected the blow, but ended up with a mortal wound before he gave the killing blow.

Dastan found him and gave him a new chance.

Sylum Inspiration: Dastan

Sanguen Vitae: Hunter

He woke up alone in the desert. He feels weird, but is surprised he is alive. A thirst rages through him but he knows he has to get to the site to reveal the truth abut Nizam, and save Tamina.

He returns to Alamut to reveal the truth about Nizam and the Dagger to Tus. The dagger is being guarded by, The Hassassin. Dastan confronts him, who then asks how life is for the undead. Dastan ignores him and confronts Tus and explains the dagger’s mechanics to him and then stabs the dagger into his heart, killing himself; Tus brings Dastan back to life by rewinding time and realizes his brother has been innocent all along. Soon after, however, Nizam arrives and kills Tus, leaving The Hassassin to kill Dastan.

The Hassassin, bored with the situation, leaves Dastan to his fate, disappearing.

Dastan along with Tamina confront Nizam about the dagger, that it’s only to fix one moment in time. It doesn’t go back further. He refuses to believe him, and holds down the mechanism only to be transported to the moment when the two entered the room.

He screams in fury and slams the dagger into Tamina, as he turns to run, his hand is grabbed and the dagger pulled from him. Dastan demands they save Tamina. The man dressed in Medjai clothing, shakes his head, saying Dastan has only the power to save her now.

Dastan holds her to him, not sure what he means but acts on instincts. Fangs he had no idea he had dropped, she smiled at him stating, she knew their destinies were intertwined.

As Tamina recouped he learned that the Medjai was Ardeth Bay, and he had heard of Nizam’s schemes and had come with his men to help the city of Amulet, arriving too late. He explained about Vampires and Mates. He along with his own Mate, Rick, stayed in the city while Dastan and Tamina began to rebuild it.

They secured the Dagger into a vault, hoping to keep its secrets from the history books. Over the years it has only become legend.

It was Ardeth who explained who Dastan’s father was. That The Hassassin was right, he was the last of the Assassins. There had been families that wore the title of Assassin, born and raised through the Egyptian courts, trained by Medjai.

Dastan is the last.

He takes him to Masyaf, showing him where their old establishment was. Dastan was disgusted at what the order of Hassassins had done to it.

He swore then to rebuild it.

He would not be the last.

It took some time with the help of Tamina, watching over both cities. They trained as Hunters, and Dastan continued on to enhance his skills for an Assassin.

Over the centuries he built up Masyaf and the order.

(Dilios Note: Not that I know much of this *shifty look*)

They both Hunt for Alexander and Ardeth when need be, but both Clan leaders know Dastan’s focus is on Masyaf.

The one time he did leave someone in charge it all went to shit and Altaïr still hasn’t quite forgiven him for that fuck up. After settling back in Masyaf, Dastan watches as Altaïr deals with his wife and child. When Darim comes screaming to him for help, he discovers Altaïr has been gravely injured. He offers to Turn him.

Over the centuries he’s left Masyaf in Altair’s hands, so he could focus on hunting The Hassassin.

When he is at Masyaf he has no problem with Tamina hunting with Wilhelm – or their relationship. Though he’s made sure Wilhelm knows why he’s the leader of the Assassins.

He watched from the sidelines with Ezio and Altaïr, amazed at the Italian’s skills.

He’s trained many who have gone to Masyaf and sent them back into the field. When he had heard rumors of The Hassassin in India, he traveled back with Arbaaz. He watched as the new Assassin confronted his own issues, but ended up facing his own death.

Today he splits his time between Masyaf and Greece, and he’s thankful for modern technology as it’s easier to communicate between the two locations.

Sylum Inspiration: Tamina

Sanguen Vitae: Hunter

Ardeth explains all about Vampires and also the Assasins. Tamina encourages Dastan to find more on his heritage, and stands with him as they are trained as Hunters.

She’s with him while he rebuilds Masyaf. Over time she starts to build a section of Masyaf for families, and later training grounds for woman Assassins.

Not an Assassin herself, she learns to Hunt on her own. She meets Wilhelm and the two begin to Hunt together. She develops a good relationship with him, though she’s pretty sure Dastan has warned Wilhelm a few times about when too much is too much.

Wilhelm still hasn’t forgiven her for the Hansel and Gretel moment. For that matter neither has Hansel and Gretel.

Sylum Inspiration: Siberius Vaako

Sanguen Vitae Clan: Lead Hunter

Vaako was a dedicated Roman Soldier, who followed his General Marcus Antonius throughout his career, and even helped him get out of Rome and back to Egypt after Caesar was killed.  He stayed by his side, despite the need to smack the crap out of him.

When Marc was Turned and escorted out of Egypt.

He followed.

Once Marc was Mated.

He followed.

Until Marc finally got the idea and Turned him.

Sylum Inspiration: Butch Cassidy

Sanctuary: Hunter

Robert Leroy Parker (Butch Cassidy) was born April 13, 1866, in Beaver, Utah, the first of 13 children born to British immigrants Maximillian Parker and Ann Campbell Gillies. The Parker and Gillies families had converted in England and Scotland to the Mormon faith and immigrated to Utah. Maximilian Parker was 12 when his family arrived in Salt Lake in 1856; Ann Gillies arrived with her family in 1859, aged 14. The two were married in July 1865.

Robert Leroy Parker, named for his paternal grandfather, was the first of the 13 children of Maximillian and Ann Parker. He grew up on their ranch near Circleville, Utah,215 miles south of Salt Lake City. He left home during his early teens. While working at a dairy farm, he formed a close relationship with his mentor, a cowboy and cattle rustler who called himself Mike Cassidy (an alias for John Tolliver “J. T.” McClammy). Parker subsequently worked at several ranches, in addition to a brief stint as a butcher in Rock Springs, Wyoming, when he acquired the nickname “Butch”, to which he soon appended the surname Cassidy in honor of his old friend.

He associated with a circle of criminals, most notably his closest friend Elzy Lay, Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan, Ben Kilpatrick, Harry Tracy, Will “News” Carver, Laura Bullion, and George Curry, who became the nucleus of the Wild Bunch.

On August 13, 1896, Cassidy, Lay, Harvey Logan and Bob Meeks robbed the bank at Montpelier, Idaho, escaping with approximately $7,000. Shortly thereafter he[clarification needed] recruited Harry Longabaugh, alias “The Sundance Kid”, a native of Pennsylvania, into the Wild Bunch.

In early 1897, Cassidy was joined at Robbers Roost by Ann Bassett, Elzy Lay, and Lay’s girlfriend Maude Davis. The four hid there until early April, when Lay and Cassidy sent the women home so that they could plan their next robbery. On April 21, 1897, in the mining town of Castle Gate, Utah, Cassidy and Lay ambushed a small group of men carrying the payroll of the Pleasant Valley Coal Company, stealing a sack containing $7,000 in gold, with which they fled to the Robbers Roost.

On June 2, 1899, the gang robbed a Union Pacific Overland Flyer near Wilcox, Wyoming, a robbery that became famous and which resulted in a massive man hunt. Many notable lawmen of the day took part in the hunt for the robbers, but they were not found.

During a shootout with lawmen following that robbery, both Kid Curry and George Curry shot and killed Sheriff Joe Hazen. Tom Horn, a killer for hire employed by the Pinkerton Agency, obtained information from explosives expert Bill Speck about the Hazen shooting, and Horn passed this information to Pinkerton detective Charlie Siringo. The gang escaped into the Hole-In-The-Wall. Siringo was assigned the task of capturing the outlaw gang. He became friends with Elfie Landusky, who was using the last name Curry after allegedly becoming pregnant by Kid Curry’s brother, Lonny. Through her, Siringo intended to locate the gang.

On July 11, 1899, Lay and others were involved in a Colorado and Southern Railroad train robbery near Folsom, New Mexico, which Cassidy may have planned and personally directed. A shootout ensued with local law enforcement in which Lay killed Sheriff Edward Farr and Henry Love; Lay was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at New Mexico State Penitentiary.

The Wild Bunch would separate following a robbery and flee in different directions, reuniting at a predetermined location, such as the Hole-in-the-Wall hideout, Robbers Roost, or Madame Fannie Porter’s brothel, in San Antonio, Texas.

It was 1902 when Butch and Sundance ended up robbing a bank that happened to have Will and Sparrow inside. It went wrong from the moment they stepped into the building. In the end Sundance and Butch escaped with the two Vampires’ help, and ended up Turned.

No one was surprised they were Mates.

Sylum Inspiration: Jack Harkness

Sanctuary: Hunter

Very little is known about Jack.

He was born in England, hints have been dropped that it was in or around London.

He joined the Army during World War 2.  His service record disappeared, so no one was sure what unit he was in or how he ended up behind enemy lines.  (Dilios Note: Rumors and theories … both of which I hate speculating on … point towards him working as a spy – I’ve not yet had this confirmed and Shadow isn’t returning my phone calls)

Spike ran into him while he was fighting a group of Rogues, he was impressed that Jack was holding own against them.   Once Jack finished off the last Rogue, with a flourish of his sword, he turned on Spike.

He still wasn’t sure how he ended up Turned and Mated.
