  1. It has been 3 years and 11 months since I had a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery all at the same time. Eight hours in surgery and 2 hours recovery.

I had my most wonderful niece who, at that time, was a nurse, stepped up and became my biggest cheerleader and the best at supporting me in my daytime, nighttime, nightmare. She set up all the many appointments, drove me to all of them and kept track of all the various things I would need to do or remember. I was a mess. That word CANCER is so hard, that even now I don’t say it. I say that big operation I had a while back. CANCER just scares me.

For me, the most difficult part of this whole bad trip, is that many thought once the operation was over and I healed, that it was all over. No more cancer, just get up and get on with life. My fear doesn’t go away. I didn’t feel any different, nothing ached, no fever, rash or any other sign that my body was starting to kill me.

Hug your friend. I know you will be there for the whole journey because that is just the type person you are. You stay committed. If I can help in any way, let me know. Any thing I can do, I will.
