Seven Days of Summer 2026: Day Six

Title: Sensei

Author: Bj Jones

Rating: PG-13

Sylum Timeline: 2014

Summary: Nathan Keys was a typical sixteen year old, who finds solace in learning Karate. When his Sensei meets his grandfather, old history and stories come out – including who he’s named after.

Sylum Characters: Nathan Algren, Kensei, Marco & Niccolo Polo, Jonathan Wales and other Shogun Characters – introducing Daniel LaRusso

Author’s Note: I’ve been wanting to do this story for a while, but there were a lot of elements. I had read ‘Waxing On’ by Ralph Macchio and re watched Karate Kid and it gave me the vehicle I needed to get the story written, but from a different perspective.  This will have a major edit before it goes up onto the Archive, as I got this done just in time 😀

2nd Author’s Note:

Daniel LaRusso glanced around the dojo smiling softly, as he watched the students going through their exercises. Miyagi-Do was not a large dojo, nothing compared to the size of Cobra Kai, but they had enough to keep the place open, and he had savings.

They offered classes for kids, who wanted to learn a new style of karate, and work their way to a black belt. The self-defense classes were popular with women, and were taught in six week increments. Many of the students were there to learn a way of life, more than the ability to kick some ass.

Daniel grinned, there were a few who had found their way to Miyagi-Do because of his famous history, or the movie. They discovered quickly that he wasn’t teaching how to beat the crap out of the ‘bad guy’. Instead focused on self-improvement, building confidence, and how to defend against bullies. If a few assholes got the shit beaten out of them, well he wasn’t complaining too hard.

If there was one thing he still hated after all these years, it was bullies.

But he’s also an adult now, and realized things weren’t just black and white. The fact he can have conversations with Johnny Lawrence, and not set off world war three is a testimony to the teachings of Mr. Miyagi. They don’t always see eye to eye, and their styles of teaching are as opposite as one can get, but they also see the strengths in the different styles. There are times he sends kids over to Cobra Kai, because their needs and personality fit Johnny’s teachings, and Johnny sends kids his way for the same reason.

Despite the fact they work decently together, and don’t have nightly street fights, it didn’t mean he wasn’t one of the loudest to cheer every time one of his kids takes out a Cobra Kai student in competitions.

“Nathan.” He called out to his newest student, a young blonde teenager who had moved into the area about six months ago. “You’re over reaching, and making yourself unbalanced. A weakness the opponent could counter.”

“Thanks.” The sixteen year old moved back to the starting point, and started the sequence over. He had started training at the Miyagi-Do about six weeks ago. He had been taking lessons since he was twelve, back in his home town in Virginia. Nathan had told him that a kid from his class had recommended Cobra Kai. When he showed up, Johnny took one look at him, sent him to Daniel.

Daniel had liked the kid instantly. There was something about him that reminded him of Miyagi, a calming presence with a sense of mischievousness.

Nathan had explained that his mother, Carol, had divorced his cheating father, and moved back to California to be close to family. Nathan had taken to Southern California life with ease, though his soft Southern accent usually brought on teasing.

Hence the renewed interest in continuing his karate studies. Nathan was tall, gangley, but fast. He had taken to Okinawa style Karate with ease, and was excelling.

After a few more minutes, he finished the set and then bowed to Daniel. “Thanks for letting me come in early today.”

“No problem.” Daniel smiled brightly. “You’re one of my favorite students, but don’t tell anyone.”

Nathan laughed lightly. “I’m so glad I found this place. The last dojo I was at back home, was more competition orientated. The teachers were only interested in training the kids who were going somewhere, not learning just to learn.”

“Well here at Miyagi-Do we look at the world of karate differently, and actually teach a unique style.” Daniel commented as Nathan moved to the edges of the mats to pack a few of his belongings. “Got a hot date tonight?”

Nathan blushed, but shook his head. “No. I’ve made like two friends since I got here, one of them is my cousin. My grandpa is back from a conference he was at in Canada, and wanted to take me to Disneyland as a late birthday gift.”

“Disneyland! Now that’s a great gift.” Daniel laughed having his own memories of going to the Happiest Place on Earth. “It’s just you?”

“Only kid.” Nathan zipped his bag and stood up. “Well I’m my mom’s only kid. She has three older brothers, and there’s a total of seven kids between them, my very annoying cousins. There is one that I like, only one. My mom was the youngest, and moved to Virginia for school, met dad, had me, kicked cheating dad out, moved home. I’m not used to the big family thing.”

“It was just me and my mom, so I get it.” He walked him to the door, seeing Nathan’s mother waiting. He gave her a small wave, smiling when she waved back. It was a mother thing, he remembered his own mom waving to him as he picked up Allie for their dates. “You should bring your grandfather one day. Show him your skills.”

“I’m not sure…” Nathan hesitated. “There’s a lot of rumors and stories in the family about prejudices against anything Asian. I never quite got the whole story.”

“Doesn’t hurt to ask.” Daniel assured him. “I’ve found that family rumors are usually based upon bad assumptions and unwanted family advice.”

Nathan laughed lightly. “Moving back has been good, but it’s like learning a whole new system. Mom at one point was like ‘this is why I moved to Virginia’ but she loves her brothers, and grandpa is pretty awesome. I’ll talk to him while riding Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Daniel gave him one last pat on the shoulder. “Enjoy the turkey legs!” He waited until the boy was in the car then headed back into the dojo. His gaze focused on the picture of Miyagi, with a smile and bow he put his focus on the next set of students coming in.

***

Nathan walked into his grandfather’s house, a few steps behind his mother. They hadn’t had time to go home for him to change, his bags for the weekend were already in the car. He was a bit self conscious wearing his karate gi, with his green belt, though Sensei Daniel said he wasn’t far off from earning his blue belt.

One of his older cousins gave him a look and rolled his eyes, but didn’t say anything. He set his bag down in the lobby, and followed his mom further into the house. He had only been at his grandpa’s house a few times, since they moved to California. It was a decent sized place in the hills of Chatsworth, rumors had it that a few famous celebrities lived nearby. He had heard his mom fighting with her brothers, as they wanted him to sell the place and move to a smaller retirement community after grandma had died, she told them to leave him alone.

Nathan really didn’t want to get in the middle of family politics, but it seemed his uncles wanted more control over grandpa and his practice, and refused to listen to his mom since she ‘abandoned the family’. It all seemed pointless. As far as he knew grandpa was sound of mine, physically fit, and was likely annoyed and entertained by his kids obvious plans to tuck him away in some home.

“Nathan.” Speaking of the old man. He had to admit, for eighty his grandfather looked good. He was tall, and lanky just slightly over six feet, with most of his height being in his long legs. A bright smile, laughing blue eyes, and a headful of white hair.

“Grandpa.” He instantly took the offered hug. “I need a shower, then change before we leave.”

“I didn’t know you were taking Karate.” He stepped back and looked at his grandson with pride, noticing the green belt. “How do you like it?”

“Can’t believe he’s still doing that Kung Fu shit.” One of his cousins, 2nd cousin, wasn’t sure how it worked, as Bill was his mom’s Aunt’s kid, so her cousin and his… he didn’t really care.

“Karate is a difficult sport, it takes a lot of mental power along with the physical.” Grandpa gave the man a disapproving look. “How long have you been working on it?”

“I started about four years ago, I’m working towards my blue belt. I found a dojo that focuses on more than the fighting styles, but also the spiritual and endurance.” Nathan answered, happy to see his grandfather interested in his pursuits. “My Sensei thinks I could do trials in a few months, we’re working on the methodology, and making sure I understand philosophies before moving forward.”

“Why would you need to understand philosophy?” Bill mocked his younger cousin. “All you need to know is how to kick someone in the face.”

Carol snorted when she saw the same disgusted look on her son and father’s face. “Bill, considering the closest sport you have ever done is beer pong, I suggest you leave the philosophy to others.” She rolled her eyes and pushed him out of the area, giving the grandfather and grandson some time.

“I’ll let you take a shower and freshen up.” Grandpa patted Nathan on the shoulder. “You can tell me all about your lessons on the way to Disney.”

Nathan stepped back and put his hands straight down his side, then bowed. He was surprised his grandfather did the exact same bow – perfectly.

***

The trip to Disneyland was awesome. Nathan enjoyed the weekend getaway, spending the time getting to know his grandpa. He was surprised at how knowledgeable and cool he was, even though there were some rides his grandfather refused to ride, he still waited in line with his grandson, as the two talked about everything.

Nathan discovered his grandpa loved Winnie the Pooh, and wore the Pooh ears with pride the whole trip. The stuffed cuddly Eeyore that he bought Nathan now had a forever home on his bed. With a renewed enthusiasm, he continued his karate studies, and was working with Daniel to do a special presentation of his skills for his blue belt ceremony.

Daniel smiled at the hyperactive teenager. “Grandpa didn’t mind you taking Karate?”

“No, he actually was very encouraging.” He paused for a moment wiping the sweat from his forehead. “He actually seemed knowledgeable on the subject.”

“Why did you think he was against you learning Karate?” LaRusso asked as he picked up the various tools used during the training. He had taken to training Nathan an hour three times a week, in the evening before closing. Giving him some one on one time, for the final tests.

“It’s weird.” There was a pause, then a deep sigh. Daniel looked up to see Nathan walking over to the altar that had a picture of Miyagi. “My family has always had these snide comments about anything Asian, especially against Japanese. I have an older cousin who loves Anime, you would have thought they were watching porn by the way members of the family reacted. By the way, they are the only one of the cousins that I like.” He glanced over at Daniel. ” When I started karate, mom told me not to mention it to certain family members. Then it got out when I came in 2nd during a competition. My great Aunt, grandpa’s sister berated me that Christmas telling me to stop with such nonsense. My mom politely told her to shut the hell up. Since we lived in Virginia, we weren’t really a part of big family gatherings so it hadn’t mattered. Once I moved back to California, and it got out I still did Karate you would have thought it was a betrayal to the family.”

Daniel frowned, not quite comprehending the issues of learning Karate.

Nathan gave the altar a bow, then focused back on the conversation with his Sensei. “I lived just outside Richmond, Virginia. The town was steeped in Southern traditions.” Daniel shook his head, getting exactly what the teenager was saying. “I would hear very similar comments while in school, or society functions my parents dragged me to, but instead of Asians it was African Americans. I figured out quickly, a large part of my family are racists assholes.”

“That sucks.” Daniel had dealt with his own predetermined conceptions while growing up, and learned a lot about himself while studying in Okinawa, with Miyagi. He’s also trained kids who deal with racism on a daily basis, and there are times he just wanted to go beat the shit out of some people. It was the one thing Johnny and him agreed with, they have both kicked people out of their dojo for the racists and sexists attitudes.

“I never knew why until recently.” He sat down on one of the mats, cross legged elbows resting on his knees. He was not surprised when Daniel sat across from him. “My grandfather was in a Civilian Interment camp during the Second World War. His father was a British diplomat, and when the war broke out the whole family was arrested, separated and sent to the camps.”

Daniel shook his head. “None of those camps were good. I know many died, I am sorry your grandfather went through that, especially as a kid.”

“He doesn’t talk about it, not much. The only reason I finally discovered it was because one of mom’s cousins yelled at me for bringing back traumatic memories, by wearing my karate gi.” Nathan frowned, it was obvious the attack had affected him. “Grandpa was the one who told him that it was his trauma, and they couldn’t use it against someone else, especially family.”

‘Do not speak for me.’ His voice was firm and tinged with disappointment. ‘I was the one who went through that ordeal, not you. If seeing my grandson in his karate outfit was a trigger, it would be mine to deal with, not you or him.’

‘How do you handle such disrespect.’ Bill glared at Nathan.

‘What disrespect. Nathan is learning a sport, a way of life, and discipline that will follow him through his life.’ Grandpa stood and confronted his nephew. ‘I understood your mother’s fears and hatreds, didn’t agree with them, but I understood. But you can’t judge a whole culture on what happened seventy years ago, especially under the fact it didn’t happen to you personally.’

‘Fucking Japs…’

‘Get out.’ Grandpa’s voice dropped low and hard, his hand thrown out pointing towards the door. ‘I made the mistake of not always countering your mother’s racism. I will not have it in my house.’

‘They locked you up and tortured you.’

‘Yes and we locked them up and stole their property. We have also murdered thousands of Native Americans, and enslaved a whole race. By your theory we should be treated with disdain for those atrocities.’

‘It’s not the same … ‘

‘It’s the exact same.’ Grandpa refused to back down. ‘Get out. If you can’t keep a civil tongue, don’t come back. It’s a shame your mother taught you such hatred, to the point your own daughter doesn’t speak to you.’

“Basically a good portion of my family are racists because grandpa was in an internment camp.” Daniel finished the story. “He didn’t want to talk so we left quickly, and here I am. I did get a message that he still wants to see my belt ceremony.”

“If it would make you and your grandfather more comfortable we can do a quiet ceremony so it could just be the two of you, well and your mom.”

Nathan smiled. “That would be great.”

***

Daniel had everything ready.

He had been anxious all day, one would think it was his kid going through his trials for the next belt. In the past six months, he had grown close to Nathan. Partially because the teenager reminded him of himself, when he met Mr. Miyagi. Though Nathan was a lot smarter, and not nearly as stroppy.

The formal tests had been on Saturday, it was a large event, to showcase many different students leveling up to the next stage. He had one student, who received her black belt. She was soon off to college and well hopefully no one would be stupid enough to get on her bad side. A few from the younger classes went up a level, and an older student in their forties had just achieved his green belt, after a twenty-five year gap between studies. Mr. Miyagi had never believed in belts, but Daniel had added it into his teachings, knowing kids needed goals.

Tonight though was special.

Nathan was bringing his grandfather to the dojo, to meet his Sensei and witness his grandson receive his next belt.

He hadn’t talked much with Carol, just verification of attendance, and if there was anything he should put away or have on hand. Carol smiled, and said everything would be perfect.

“Sensei.”

Daniel had his best Karate gi on, and was wearing the bandana that Mr. Miyagi had given him. To this day it was one of his most precious belongings. With ease he moved out of the kneeling position he was in, and walked over to Nathan, and his grandfather.

“Nathan.”

“This is my grandfather…”

“Benjamin Stanley, most call me Ben.” The older man stepped forward with his hand out and a bright smile. “It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes others to figure out my name instead of one of my kid’s dad or just grandpa.”

Daniel laughed lightly. “Daniel LaRusso, welcome to Miyagi-Do Dojo.”

Ben paused as he stepped back, head tilted in slight confusion. “Miyagi?”

“Do you know Mr. Miyagi?” Daniel asked curiously.

“No, but a friend once told me he was trained by a Miyagi.” He glanced around the dojo, noticing instantly it was more traditional than some of the places located in strip malls across the Valley. “Did he come to the US after the war?”

“No.” Daniel gestured towards the portrait just above the small altar that had a den-den daiko sitting on top of it, the one he brought back from Okinawa. “His parents moved to the US in the early 1900’s. Though many of his family are still in Japan.”

“I wonder if it’s a great uncle or something.” Ben’s voice was soft as he walked over towards the altar, studying the photo. “He has that Sensei look about him.”

“He was my teacher.” Daniel knew he had a found smile on his face. “I was a messed up teenager, when he started teaching me his family style Karate. At the time I wanted to learn to fight my bullies, instead he taught me self-confidence, and was the father figure I needed.”

“I think I saw that movie.” Ben smiled over at Daniel.

“That movie came out a year after the whole All Valley Tournament. I never knew if it was some odd coincidence or someone saw the fight, and built a story. It’s not exact, but you wouldn’t believe how many times I get called the ‘Karate Kid’.”

Ben laughed lightly, then turned to his grandson. “Let’s see you get your next belt.”

Nathan went through all of the drills and tests, Daniel set out for him. When he finished the last of it, he was sweating but smiling brightly. He took a step back, put his hands at his side, then bowed, his Sensei returned it.

“Congratulations Nathan, you have followed the tenants of Okinawa Karate and will advance to the next level.” He walked over and took the blue belt off the table and held it out to Nathan. The teenager grinned as he took it and switched out his belts.

“Thank you.” He didn’t want to cry but the moment was overwhelming, and he still had years to go to get his black belt. Once he finished tying his new belt he gave his teacher a hug, then turned to his grandfather who was watching with pride and tears in his eyes. “Grandpa?”

“You were amazing.” He stood up pulling his grandson into his arms. “You remind me so much of your namesake.”

“What?” Nathan stepped back confused. “My namesake?”

“Nathan.” Ben had a pained expression, but also one of love and sorrow. “He was the one who taught me karate, or at least the tenants of karate. He kept me safe. I’m the man I am today because of him.”

Carol stepped up to her boys. “Dad, I’ve never talked to Nathan about your time in the camps.” She glanced over at her very confused son. “Nor who he was named for.”

“Ah.” Ben glanced over to Daniel. “I would be curious to know more of the style you’re teaching. It’s very familiar to what my Nathan taught me.”

“During your time in the Interment Camp?” Nathan asked.

Ben grabbed a chair and sat down. “I’m too old for this much standing.” He noticed that Daniel brought more seats, and stepped back to give them privacy. “You can stay, it’s your dojo I’ve just commandeered for story time.”

Daniel gave a small bow, then settled on the floor.

“My father was a diplomat for England stationed in Japan. He was very good at it, actually. Had a way about him that kept people calm, and was able to get them to open up. He was also very persuasive.” Ben smiled at his daughter’s snort, she had encountered her grandfather’s persuasiveness many times. “My mom was an American, but her father had businesses in England, which is how the two met. They fell in love, got married, had my sister Arlene, and then myself. We lived in Tokyo, for a few years I remember the smells, the food, it was exciting for a six year old. Father taught me Japanese, at least enough to understand what was going on around me, especially in the school I was attending.”

“Then the war hit.” Daniel stated from his position, knowing enough of the history. It was something he learned about from Miyagi, not just the Internment Camps in the US, but also the ones in Japan.

“Yeah.” Ben sighed, then centered himself. “I had just turned eight, when the soldiers raided the house.”

***

He had no idea what was going on, everything was loud. Dad had taught him some Japanese but the soldiers were talking too fast, and were pushing and screaming. He couldn’t help the tears as he gripped his father’s arm as they were dragged outside of their home to a waiting truck.

He was in between his parents, Arlene next to mom. They all looked scared, as did the rest of the occupants in the truck. His dad was talking to others, trying to figure out what was going on, but it was too much for Ben to follow. He was cold and tired, and they had taken his bear away from him.

The next thing he knew it was day time, and they were being yelled at to leave the truck and pushed into a holding area, with others. Some of them he recognized from dad’s work, others from the school. There was more yelling when his mom and sister were separated from them and shoved into an area that was filled with other women, who were crying and yelling for their husbands, fathers, and children.

“He’s eight, let him be with his mother.” His dad demanded, looking over to his wife and daughter.

“He’s old enough.”

What he hadn’t realized at that moment, it would be years before he saw his mother and sister again.

***

“It didn’t take long for me to stop crying.” Ben was lost in the memories. “Dad comforted me as much as he could, but we had to keep a brutal pace as they moved us from location to location. After I was shaken by a few of the soldiers, and then smacked. I learned to stop crying. After that I kept quiet, and worked to keep up. I didn’t want to be left behind, like a few of the older ones had been.”

“Grandpa.” Nathan was visually upset, wiping tears from his eyes.

He moved his chair to be closer to his grandson. “It’s alright.” He wiped the tears from his cheek. “I survived, as did my whole family, which was a blessing. Now let me tell you about Nathan. He saved and protected me, then we protected each other.”

***

He learned not to ask about food. When there was food and water, it was a blessing. Ben stayed close to his father, stayed away from the soldiers and just tried to be invisible. He was the youngest among all the men. The closest one his age was thirteen, many of the men were surprised he hadn’t been sent with the woman, as most of the kids stayed with their mothers.

“I think they wanted to use him to keep me in control.” His father explained to the older man with dark hair, who had a slight accent.

“My son is grown and I’m scared for him every damn day.” The man glanced over to the nice blonde, who always took time to sit with Ben and tell him wondrous stories. “Marco has a bit of a temper, and I worry he’s going to say or do something.”

“He’s taken time to keep Ben occupied, which I’m grateful for. No one should be here, let alone a child.”

Ben knew that the situation they were in was bad. He was always hungry, everyone was. He was tired of the work they made him do. It was hard but he kept going. He didn’t want his dad to worry.

Then one day, while they were dragging wood through the jungle, he tripped and dropped the pile he was carrying. One of the guards had started screaming at him, then grabbed him by the arm and yanked him up. He had tried not to cry, but couldn’t help it.

Suddenly the pressure was gone and he was dropped back to the ground. He looked up to see one of the men, who hung out with Marco standing over him in protection. He was arguing with the soldier in perfect Japanese, which just irritated the soldier even more, to the point the guard hit the dark haired man in the stomach with the butt of his gun, then across the jaw.

Ben jumped up and rushed to where the man had fallen, repaying the protection. “Leave him alone!”

“It’s okay.” The man’s voice was soft. “I’m okay.”

Ben glared at the guard who huffed then stomped away. He turned back towards the man and sat down in the dirt. “I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for.” He shifted until more seated. “What’s your name?”

“Ben.” He answered by holding out his hand, because that is what his dad said to do to be polite.

“Nathan.” He took the offered hand and shook it. “Now let’s get these pieces of wood stacked up and catch up with the rest of them.”

***

Daniel went completely still listening to the story.

He had heard something very similar, but from the other perspective. While he was in Okinawa, Miyagi had told him a few more secrets about who he was, and where he came from. Introduced him to Katsamoto, and his Mate Nathan, the leaders of Shogun Clan.

He hadn’t cared about the Vampire aspect, it had just made Miyagi even cooler. He was fascinated about the living history that stood before him. He had stayed in Japan for years, learned the language, culture, and variety of different styles of fighting.

He had met Marco and Niccolo Polo. Introduced to Yasuka, and Shau Jun, both task masters when it came to training. He was teased by everyone about ‘Wax on, Wax off’, even introducing him to taking the jacket on and off. Sadistic bastards, the lot of them. When he wasn’t getting his ass handed to him, he sat and listened. Slowly over the time he spent there, he learned about what happened during the war.

Miyagi had told him that he should learn all points of view.

Daniel knew he never really got the full story of what happened, but enough to know that Nathan had been singled out, took a blunt form of the punishments to protect his clan members. It was why Wales had a tendency to be over protective, and Kensei gave Nathan all the good snacks. Even Niccoli gives Nathan first dips on new things he’s discovered, and Marco tells him all the good stories.

He remembers one night sitting outside in the small garden, needing some quiet away from the clan, when Nathan had come out and sat down next to him.

“How can you live in Japan?” He asked only to smack himself for asking.

Nathan chuckled slightly. “It’s my home. No one can take that from me.”

Daniel glanced over to him. “You’re a better man than I am.”

“You got some years left in ya.” He paused and looked up at the evening sky. “What happened in the camps was not pleasant. I still have nightmares and insecurities that come up because of it. But I refused to let them win, and drive me from my home.”

There was a pleasant, comfortable moment of silence.

“There was a kid who was shoved in with the rest of us, barely ten years old.” Nathan looked out over the garden as he spoke. “The head of the camp was using him to keep the men in control. No one would do anything to get the kid harmed. Marco had taken him under his wing, keeping him occupied and shielded. Then one day, while collecting wood he tripped and the guard stepped in to attack, and I stopped him.”

Another long pause, this one was less comfortable.

“After that we both ended up on the Commander’s radar.”

“What happened to him?”

“We got him out, he grew up and became a successful psychiatrist who specialized in at the time PTSD, later all types of trauma. Got married, had four kids, and the last I checked grandkids.” He looked at Daniel. “I would go through everything again, to make sure that kid had the chance to live.”

***

Ben ended up moving between his father, Marco and Nathan. They were the two his father trusted the most with his boy. Marco told him stories, Nathan started to teach him karate. The guards were happy to see that the ‘child’ was put to work, never realizing all the scrubbing, stacking, and climbing was teaching him how to defend himself.

The big guy had chuckled, when he bent down to Ben. “When we get out of here, I’ll show you how to gut someone with a knife, much faster than beating the shit out of them.”

“Wales.”

He stood and gave Nathan a smirk. “What?”

“Your own wife can still beat the shit out of you.”

“I know.” The grin was wide, and got a few of the men to laugh, even if Ben didn’t quite undestand. “Though Niccolo’s wife is very skilled with a blade.”

“She’ll gut you.” Niccolo gave him a small smirk, then glanced over to Ben. “Ignore the brute. You’re doing very well in your training.”

“Thank you.” He glanced around making sure there were no guards, then put his hands down at his side and bowed, keeping eye contact. Niccolo bowed his head in return. “I need to get to my dad.”

Ben ran off to find his father talking with a few of the other men. He knew they were discussing trying to escape, or even just one getting out to see what was in the area. Ben didn’t think it was a good idea, but they never asked him.

He ignored the talk, and just practiced his moves, then one day he forgot to check his surroundings, when a guard knocked him slightly off balance.

“Kid thinks he knows Karate.”

Ben’s dad stepped up, pulling his son behind him. “He’s a kid, we’re just keeping him occupied.”

“Who teach him Karate?”

“I learned a few things while in Japan.” His father lied, not wanting to put any scrutiny on any of the others in the camp.

The guard snorted, glanced over to where Marco and Nathan were watching intently. “I doubt you know Karate. Got good form kid though over reach will knock you off balance.” He then just walked away.

“I’m sorry.”

“Just be more careful.” His dad smiled at him, then pushed him into the small room they were all in.

Days later he noticed the soldier watching, he would give small tips and adjust a form then nodded when Ben adjusted his stance. Though the guard was kind, Ben didn’t trust him, as all the other guards were mean.

There was a moment, a small moment that he thought that he was going to be okay. He was eating more, noticing that Nathan and Marco gave his father some of their rations to make sure Ben had food. He was always tired from the hard labor, but he was learning so much from Nathan.

Then something happened to change everything.

Ben couldn’t see past the load he was carrying, it was too big and heavy. He wasn’t paying attention, and didn’t hear the voices coming around the corner and ran headlong into some of the soldiers, dropping the full load of wood onto the ground. He opened his mouth to apologize when he was backhanded hard enough he landed on the ground with a thud. Blinking a few times he looked up to see the man in charge of the camp. Ben scooted back, terrified of what was going to happen.

Again in seconds Nathan was in front of him, talking in Japanese.

The two argued, or more the soldier yelled at Nathan, who bowed his head and shifted in a certain way that seemed to calm the man down. There was more commotion, some laughter from other guards, but Ben noticed the one who had yelled was studying Nathan.

He didn’t understand it, but knew something was different this time.

Nathan had pushed Ben onto Marco after the incident, telling him he would be safer at the moment out of sight. He liked Marco, he never treated Ben like an idiot or a kid. He knew most of the men around his dad, ignored him or patronized him when he asked questions.

It had frustrated him.

He was almost nine years old.

Yeah a kid, but he stopped being a kid the moment he was dragged across the jungle and tossed into hell.

Nathan didn’t treat him like a kid. He talked to him, helped him understand what was going on. Didn’t hide the horribleness they were in. Marco was the same, he answered the questions Ben asked, maybe in simpler terms, but he didn’t lie.

Ben liked Marco, and his dad, Nico, was cool.

Wales was fun, but intimidating, and Kensei was kind but very quiet.

But, he wanted to hang out with Nathan.

One morning he woke up to see Nathan in the middle of the camp, knelt on the ground with wooden spikes surrounding him.

He moved to help him, but was grabbed by his father and held back. Ben glanced over to see Wales pacing like a caged animal. Marco showed up at his side, to assure him Nathan would be fine. He was strong and stubborn.

Ben was sure the look on his face was mixed between ‘well duh’ and ‘are you kidding me’.

This lasted for hours, even into the next day.

He cried, and was upset to see his friend hurting.

Finally the Commander came down the steps and started talking to Nathan, who only stared back. Whatever he was looking for he didn’t get, and ordered him to stay there another day. He noticed that Nico and Kensei dragged Wales away from the yard and into the barracks.

Ben sat on the steps of the barracks and watched. He didn’t want Nathan to be alone. The next morning, he could hear Wales yelling, Marco patted him on the shoulder and went to help his dad. He glanced around and saw no one was nearby.

It was a bad idea, but he did it anyway.

His father taught him to be brave. Told him that it was Christian like to help others.

With determination he carried a small cup of water across the yard. He stopped in front of Nathan, who looked at him with a pained expression. Ben ignored the yells from both sides of the yard and gave him the water.

“I sealed our fate.” He looked away from his grandson, focusing on the images and banners around the dojo. “I didn’t understand it at the time, but I made it worse for him. He would’ve told you, I didn’t. That the Commander was an asshole and would’ve continued down the path, despite my water trick.”

“It wasn’t your fault.” Daniel spoke up softly, knowing a part of this story. “I’m sure Nathan would have done everything again, to keep you safe.”

Ben snorted then gave him a sad smile. “Likely so.”

“No blaming yourself for his own actions.”

“Sounds like something I would say to my patients.” Ben focused back on his grandson. “I know you have tons of questions but let me keep going.”

Nathan nodded, wiping tears from his face.

***

A few days after the incident, he was assigned to the headquarters. He was ordered to sweep, and clean the building. The work was easier, but something was wrong. Ben was happy that Nathan had recovered, but it didn’t make any sense. Nathan was constantly bringing tea to the Commander, the title he was instructed to use, and was gone for a long time.

Tea shouldn’t take that long.

As the weeks went by, the more worried Nathan’s friends became.

They were always returned to the barracks, Nathan had made sure Ben was settled with his father, while Wales had tucked Nathan into a corner, making sure to be on watch while he rested.

“Is he beating him?” He asked his father quietly.

His father frowned, then nodded slightly. “You must stay quiet and watch yourself. Do not bring any attention to yourself.”

Nathan told him the same thing.

And he did.

He stayed in the corners, watched and listened, but didn’t interfere or get in the way.

Then one day he heard yelling.

Ben stopped cleaning the floor, using the opportunity to keep up with his karate training, wipe on, wipe off. He looked over at the closed office, along with the staff. The door slammed open, Nathan was tossed out of the room. He scrambled away from the Commander, getting to his feet. Everything in his stance screamed defiance.

He had never seen this side of Nathan.

The man was always kind, and had a smile for him. There were moments he heard a firm command to the others he was with, and even to the other men. But this was something different. Everyone in the room knew it.

Nathan’s mere presence demanded respect.

The Commander stalked past Nathan, Ben realized too late he was aiming straight for him. He jumped onto his feet, knocking over the bucket as he backed away. He was grabbed by his arm and dragged across the room and tossed at Nathan.

He felt strong arms come around him, as he was pushed to the side and slightly behind the taller man. There was more shouting, as the staff jumped to do whatever the Commander was demanding. Nathan stiffened, but didn’t release Ben.

Before he could figure out what was going on, they were pushed further back into the headquarters. Into the private rooms of the Commander. Both ceremoniously shoved into a bedroom of sorts, and the door slammed shut.

This made no sense.

Nathan sighed heavily then knelt in front of Ben. “I know you’re confused right now.”

“Why would we get a nice room?”

He grimaced slightly, but kept a calm expression. Whatever was going on, Ben knew it was bad. The room was a trap.

“The Commander is requesting something of me, I refused.” He ran a hand through the dark locks. The hair was very choppy, like it hadn’t been cut right. The amount of times he watched Nathan reach to pull it back only to stop, meant it was a recent cut. Likely right before being dragged to the camp.

“He’s using me to get you to do what he wants.”

“Yes.”

Ben threw his arms around his neck. “I’m sorry.”

“This is not your fault.” Nathan held him close. “None of this is your fault. Nor is it mine. We are in a situation that is horrible and we will survive it.”

“I’m scared.”

“Oh Ben.” Nathan pulled out of the hug and cupped his cheeks. “I’m terrified. But we’ll be strong together. One day, we’ll get out of here. You’ll go home with your father, and I’ll find my partner. We’ll have good lives and this will be a bad memory.”

He wiped the tears on the back of his hand. “What happens now?”

Nathan took a deep breath, hands now on Ben’s shoulder. “I need you to promise me something.”

“Okay.”

“No matter what you hear. You do not leave this room. There are going to be things you do not understand, and I’ll explain to the best of my ability. Just know that I will keep you safe. I need you to stay quiet, and do not do anything to bring the Commander’s attention to yourself.”

“I’ll try.”

His laugh was dry, and he could see the tears in Nathan’s eyes. Ben knew he would be strong for his friend. “You are going to be stuck here. Not sure if you’ll be able to see your father.”

Ben felt the tears, he took a deep breath and tried to be strong.

“We’ll get through this.” Nathan pulled him back into his arms, holding him tight. “I’m not as good as a storyteller as Marco, but I do have a few of my own.”

The two just held onto each other until the soldiers returned. Nathan stood, pulling Ben into the back corner, as furniture was brought into the room. By the time they were done, the bed was the same, but a table with a mirror, like the one his mom had in his parents room was against one wall, a small table was added next to the bed, and a trunk filled with clothes that didn’t look like anything he had seen.

Later that night, he watched as Nathan painted his face, put on a dress that looked like those women he saw in Tokyo wear. He saw him in the mirror steady himself, then leave the room.

He didn’t return until the early morning hours.

Ben understood.

He was the hostage to make Nathan submit to the Commander.

***

The silence was deafening.

Nathan closed his eyes, trying to calm his breathing. He wanted to throw up, hug his grandpa, kill the Commander, and thank his namesake. But it explained his grandfather’s advocacy for rape victims, and helping of women’s shelters.

“I didn’t quite understand exactly what the Commander wanted.” Ben couldn’t look at any of them. “I knew it was bad. No one makes a man dress like a Geisha for tea ceremonies.” He almost grinned at the combined snort from all three members of his audience. “As I got older, I realized more of what was going on in the other room. It was the main reason I went into Psychology. I wanted to understand, and at first wanted to help soldiers who came home from war. As the years went on, I realized there were so many other traumas that were closer to home. I couldn’t help Nathan during the situation, nor afterwards but I could help others.”

“I think he would’ve been proud, dad.” Carol leaned over to give her dad a kiss on the cheek. “And I’m sure you helped in your way.”

“He told me stories about the Red Samurai, about Samurai culture, and even his family. He talked about a nephew he adored, who sounded a bit crazy if you ask me. He talked about his partner, and it took me a while to realize they were male. Nico and Wales always talked about their wives, but Nathan always said partner.”

“Explains why you didn’t care about Lane being gay.” Carol knew her father was very open minded, especially with the trauma he had endured.

“I just about disowned your brother for losing his mind over his son being gay. Like that is the worst thing that could ever happen. I took in Rita, after her idiot mother kicked her out for enjoying Anime and wanting to study in Japan.” He ran a hand over his face. “The stupid shit people get wrapped up in. There are more important things in this world to stress over, Anime and if someone is gay is not one of them.”

“What happened afterwards?” Nathan asked. “I mean. Obviously you got out. Did Nathan?”

Ben nodded then smiled. “Oh yeah. That’s how I met his partner.”

***

Ben woke up to the sound of rain against the window. He shifted in the bed, to see that Nathan had not returned from his visit to the Commander. There had been only a handful of times Ben got to see his father over the past year, and he cherished those moments. He was the only means of communication between Nathan and his friends. He only could tell them he was ‘safe’. Wales had looked murderous, but Ben began to realize, he always looked like that.

Marco was the one who explained as best he could, what the Commander was using Nathan for. Ben nodded in understanding, having already figured a few things out.

His dad was not happy that he was being used to control Nathan. When he started ranting about Nathan, Ben yelled for him to shut up.

“You don’t get to be upset!” He snapped. “This isn’t Nathan’s fault. It’s the assholes who put us here. Stop blaming the victim!” Ben stormed off back to the headquarters, cutting his time with his father short.

Nathan had held him, telling him that his father was scared.

Next time he saw his dad they both held onto each other and cried.

Ben got out of the bed and quietly moved towards the small window. The window had bars, and the only view was one of the back corners of the tall fence that enclosed the camp. He wasn’t sure what woke him up, just a weird sense of anticipation.

He stared through the bars, and at the next lightning flash he jumped back seeing a figure move through the shadows. When he went back to the window there was nothing there. That was when he noticed how quiet it was, usually there was always movement either the guards or the prisoners.

Ben crept closer to the door, trying to listen. He heard a cry, then a thud. When the door opened he jumped back, relieved to see Nathan. In just a few seconds, the man wiped everything off his face, violently tossed the silk into the corner, and pulled on the ratty clothes that were worn while in the room.

He held out his hand, Ben took it instantly. “I want you to stay next to me.” He nodded glued to his side, as they snuck down the hallway. He could hear yelling coming from the office area, it wasn’t the standard orders, more panicked.

Nathan stopped at the corner, gave Ben a look to stay put, then moved faster than he thought was possible and took down the two guards. He then moved across the room, and took down another, before gesturing for Ben to come, he ignored the bodies as he made his way to Nathan’s side.

As they made their way to the front doors, that was when Ben realized the whole camp was under attack. He could hear the soldiers panicking, shots fired sporadically, yelling coming from the prison barracks. At one point he thought he heard a roar, a small smile appeared on his face imagining it was Wales.

All he could do was watch from the door of the headquarters, as every soldier fell to shadows moving so fast, he couldn’t keep up. Across the yard he could see Marco, Nico, along with Wales and Kensei holding back the prisoners.

A man wearing a Samurai outfit stepped out of the shadow, walking slowly towards the Commander, who stood alone in the middle of the yard. They were talking but he couldn’t understand it, though his Japanese had improved over the past year, he couldn’t follow the conversation.

“Where is my Mate!”

The English was jarring, Ben couldn’t help but stare in awe. The man was powerful. Ben was terrified and the man’s calm anger wasn’t directed at him.

“You dare disgrace the Emperor!”

The back hand echoed across the yard. “Do not speak to me about disgrace.” He glanced around at the dead soldiers, and starved prisoners. “You dishonor your family, and heritage by torturing these men.”

“I have fought for my country.”

“You are a murderer and a rapist.” The man spat on him. “You do not deserve a warrior’s death.”

Ben saw Nathan move out of the shadows, across the porch, and down the stairs until he was standing behind the Commander, and in one fluid movement pulled up the stolen gun and shot him in the back of the head.

He jerked back at the sound of the gun.

A part of him should’ve been horrified, but he wasn’t. Ben had seen the haunted look in Nathan’s eyes, helped him wipe off the make-up, fold the Kimono, and laid next to him as he told stories of honor, warriors, and dragons.

He had the bruises from when the Commander held him to tightly yelling at Nathan.

The Commander was a vicious evil person, and Ben was relieved that he could not hurt them anymore.

Ben watched as Nathan dropped the gun, and then wearily stepped towards the Samurai who caught him and held him close. He suddenly understood all the stories – this warrior was the one Nathan talked about. The one that had saved him, and would come for him.

“Ben!”

He looked over to see his father push past everyone and run towards him. Ben jumped off the porch into his father’s arms holding him tight.

“I’ve got you.”

Once he was put down, that was when he saw the others. A petite woman wearing all black, with a red sash around her waist was fussing over Nico, she may have been the one he saw in the shadows. There was another woman, taller also wearing black, but the outfit was softer. She was sitting next to Wales holding him close, yelling and crying at the same time. A tall man, who looked like a warrior, was touching Marco’s face as if trying to memorize it. Lastly a tall imposing Samurai in black armour held Kensei tightly.

For a moment no one knew what to do.

They were free.

But getting out of the jungle was no easy task.

Nathan introduced Ben to Katsumoto, it was then he recognized him. He was the high ranking General, who had inspected the camps a few weeks earlier.

“It was my cover to find Nathan, and my people.” He glanced over to the small group resting on the porch steps. “Once I knew the location, we made plans to liberate it.”

“Thank you.”

“It is I who should be thanking you.” Katsumoto squatted down in front of Ben. “You have been a blessing to my Mate, Nathan speaks highly of you. You are a strong warrior.”

“I don’t want to be a soldier.”

“You do not have to be a soldier to be a warrior.” He gave him a small smile then tapped his chest. “You have the heart and strength of a warrior, you have survived.”

In less than a week, they had emptied everything they could out of the camp. Food, water, supplies, weapons, and vehicles. The fitter of the prisoners, went with the warriors and liberated the nearest camp, not wanting anyone suspicious that only one was attacked.

It wasn’t until they were at a beach, and the tall sailing ships were in the harbor that he realized that the camp they liberated was where the women were being held. Many of the prisoners rejoiced at being reunited with their wives, sisters, daughters and mothers.

When he heard his name being yelled, he looked up surprised to see his mom. Ben jumped up and ran towards her crying as they clung to each other. He glanced over to see his dad carrying Arlene.

***

“They took us on these amazing sailing ships. Like the old fashioned types, with actual sails!” Ben smiled at the memory. “We ended up in Australia, where the government took us in, got us medical treatment, and though we had to stay there for a while, we were able to make our way back to England soon after the war ended. In time, we moved to the United States. I lost track of Nathan. My dad kept in touch with a few of the other prisoners, but by the time I went to college, we stopped talking about it.”

“Did you ever look him up?” Nathan asked curiously.

“I wanted to. After I graduated with my doctorate, I planned a trip to Japan. I wanted to let him know that I was going to help people. When I mentioned it to my family, mother and Arlene lost their minds. I backed down not wanting to upset them, and kept backing down never confronting the issues. I knew why they reacted the way they did. They didn’t have a Nathan, and had a hard time in the camps. But I never countered their harsh words and attitudes. So I just stopped expressing any interest.” He stood up, stretching slightly. “I got married, had kids, grandkids … this is the first time I’ve truly thought about that time in a while.”

“Do you think we could still find out what happened to him? I mean, it’s not likely he’s still alive…”

“Ah there’s something I need to tell you.” Daniel stated as he stood, trying not to be intimidated by their attention. “I’m hoping you’ll hear me out before calling me crazy.”

Three generations of the same family looked at him, with confused suspicious yet curious expressions.

“Nathan is still alive so to speak, and I’m sure he would love to see you Ben.”

***

After Daniel confessed about Vampires, about Miyagi, that he himself was one, and part of the Shogun Clan. Things happened quickly. Well after the million and one questions that were tossed at him over the next couple of weeks.

He asked Johnny to take a few of his classes, while he would be away. It would give the kids a new perspective which is always a good thing. He contacted Kensei, and asked to speak to Katsumoto, it was a rare enough request from him that he was instantly put through.

After he quickly explained the situation, Shogun’s Clan Leader simply stated everything would be taken care of, and that all Daniel needed to do was get them to the dojo and a driver would pick them up. Two days later, he received an email with all the pertinent information. Airline tickets, first class – thank you Katsumoto. Someone would pick them up, and they would stay at least one night in the luxury hotel that was owned by the clan, mostly used for guests.

Daniel was pretty sure that afterwards, Ben and his family would be staying at the Clan House.

Ben had made sure to let the few patients he had left, that he would be going away, and had a fellow therapist be available while he was gone. Carol couldn’t get time off work, and had been tempted to quit, but that wasn’t feasible at the moment.

Instead she made sure Nathan had his passport, and was equipped for the trip.

They didn’t tell the rest of the family. As far as they knew, Ben was taking Nathan to an International convention for Karate. Since it was in the summer, he extended the time to enjoy a holiday with his youngest grandson.

There was still drama, but the cold death glare Carol was giving her brothers was enough for them to back off. Nathan hugged his mom tightly.

The first class seats kept them slightly apart, but Nathan could tell his grandfather was lost in his own memories and thoughts. Instead of bothering him, Nathan focused on reading about Japanese culture, history, and the Samurai traditions. By the time they landed, he was confident he could say hello, goodbye, and where’s the bathroom – though the last was questionable.

As they entered the baggage area, Ben stopped in his tracks, Nathan skidded to a halt making sure not to run into his grandpa. His mom would kill him, if he knocked grandpa over and he ended up in the hospital with a broken hip.

“Grandpa?”

When he didn’t get an answer he looked past him to see a large man, with a scraggly beard. He was wearing a nice suit, but the overcoat poncho thing he was wearing over it was a bit much as was the hat – not quite a cowboy hat but close enough.

“Wales?” Ben asked as he stepped forward hesitantly.

The smile was all he needed.

Ben took a few more steps and hugged the burly man. “Daniel told us all about, well the thing, but part of me just didn’t believe it.”

Wales held him close. “Looking good for 80.”

“You look better.” Ben laughed then gestured towards his grandson. “Wales, this is Nathan, my grandson.”

“Well at least he’s taller.” Wales gave the boy a quick once over, then smacked him on the shoulder knocking him forward a bit. “We’ll make a good warrior out of you yet.”

“No knives.” Ben gave him a pointed look.

“Quicker to gut someone.” He gestured towards the baggage. “Show me your bags, and let’s get you to Nathan, boy’s been pacing since Daniel told us the situation.”

When they got into the SUV, there was a beautiful woman in the front seat. She turned around and smiled. “I’m Blossom, this one’s Mate.”

“I’m sorry.” Ben gave her a small smile. He remembered her, but hadn’t talked to her during their flight to Australia, and she disappeared with Wales pretty fast once they landed.

She laughed lightly. “It’s a burden.” The look in her eyes said more. Ben remembered the two on the deck of the ship, never more than inches apart from the other.

Blossom explained where they were going, and they would stay the night in the hotel, as by the time they arrived it would be very late, and everyone needed the rest. Nathan wasn’t sure if he would get a wink of sleep, he was sure his grandpa would get less.

The hotel was something Nathan had only ever seen in the movies. It was elegant, sophisticated, and he did NOT want to know how much it cost a night. Blossom handled the front desk, getting their keys, and assured them there would be breakfast at their door by 8am.

Wales carried their bags to the room, deposited them into their separate bedrooms. Nathan stepped away from everyone and onto the balcony to stand in awe at the view. He wanted to make sure his grandpa had some private time with Wales.

He was startled when Blossom stepped onto the balcony. “Beautiful isn’t it.”

“It is. Pretty good experience for the first time traveling internationally.” He glanced back into the room to see the two sitting closely, deep in conversation.

“How much of what happened do you know?” She asked curiously.

“The basics.” He leaned against the railing, keeping an eye on his grandpa yet focused on Blossom. His mom didn’t teach him to be rude. “Not great details, but enough to know that it was bad, but he survived it and had a good life. He’s a great grandpa.”

“He told you about Nathan?”

“Yes.” He looked down for a moment. “He didn’t go into detail, but I’ve read enough and seen enough to know what that Commander was doing to Nathan. It put into perspective why grandpa specialized in trauma, and is an advocate for rape victims.”

Blossom smiled slightly. “He’s a good man.”

“He’s the best.” Though Nathan may be slightly biased. “How is everyone else handling this? I mean, I know grandpa has been quiet, likely working through memories, hasn’t slept well especially the closer to us coming to Japan.”

“I know Wales has had a few more nightmares these past few weeks. He’s also stalking Nathan more, though I think Nathan has been okay with it.” She paused and looked over at her Mate. “Jonathan is loud, big, boisterous. He annoys me, I love him dearly. I also want to kill him half the time, and will kill anyone who looks at him wrong. When we found them, he was half his weight, and quiet … I didn’t know what to do at first. The whole thing ripped our Clan apart.”

“What happened on your side if you don’t mind me asking?”

She shifted then pulled the young kid towards a set of chairs. “Japan was always very isolated, as was China and many of the Asian countries. The fact Katsumoto pulled together a clan so diverse for the region tells you a lot about who he is. The Polos were the first to arrive with Sifu, they moved between Europe and Japan for a while. Kensei washed ashore. Luckily, it was Katsumoto who found and saved him. About the same time, we got Yasuke. He was a slave brought by a Portugal Missionary. In time he left the church behind, and became a Samurai. His skills caught Sifu’s attention, who brought him to the clan. I found Wales not long after Katsumoto found Nathan. When the war broke out, they were the only Westerners we had at the time in Shogun, we had them hidden away at the Clan home.”

Nathan did some reading about the Polos, once he realized the Nico and Marco that grandpa was talking about was Niccolo and Marco Polo. He wondered if they were introduced to Shogun via Kubla Kahn, which led him to wondering how many historical people he’s read about are still roaming the world. He thought it would be really cool to sit down and talk to General Grant, he had read a lot about the Civil War – according to his teachers back in Virginia the wrong side.

“What happened?”

“Someone betrayed us.” He saw her eyes flash golden. “They waited until most of the Hunters were away, and specifically Katsumoto was talking to the Emperor trying to deescalate the situation. They came in with soldiers, and grabbed them. The only one they missed was Yasuke, and that was because he was away with Shau Jun – the two always worked together and with his black Samurai gear most couldn’t tell he wasn’t Japanese.”

“That must have been awful.” Nathan couldn’t imagine family betraying … wait actually he could.

“Katsumoto had gone into deadly quiet, we all did. Niccolo’s mate Shao Jun is an Assassin, don’t ask but you can get the idea. Marco’s mate Sifu, he’s a Hunter and is usually the guy who makes you sit and wait for the butterflies, he was too still. I … well no one touches what’s mine without losing their life … slowly.” Blossom’s gaze settled on Wales. “While we hunted down our Mates, we took Yasuke with us, as no one wanted him in Japan. Fei our Second-in-Command hunted down the betrayers. Their names have been wiped from history, we do not speak their names. All I know is they died slowly and painfully.”

“What are you two chatting about?” Wales eyed his Mate, his smile was normal, but she could see the stress underneath.

“Just filling in some gaps of the dramatic story.” With ease she stood and slid a hand across his broad shoulders, with a small pat to assure him. “How about we leave these boys to have dinner and rest.”

Jonathan smiled at her, giving Ben a wink as he trailed after his wife. “Marco will be the one to pick you up tomorrow.”

Ben waved goodbye laughing lightly, he turned to his grandson. “Are you okay?”

He nodded. “Need to catch up on some history.”

“You and me both. I can’t believe I never put together that Marco and his father Niccolo were the Polos. I mean, come on.” Ben laughed lightly as they headed into the luxury suite. “I say we order some food, and watch some Japanese drama.”

“We will have no idea what’s going on.”

“It’s a soap opera, you don’t have to understand the language. There will be fighting, a long lost twin, someone will have cheated on their spouse with an ex-girlfriend, and blackmail.” Ben grinned as he picked up the menu for room service.

“So basically our own family.”

It took Ben at least five minutes to stop laughing before he could order the food.

***

Marco walked into the hotel slightly nervous.

Nathan had asked Marco to do some research on Ben after the war had settled, making sure the whole family was safe. It hadn’t taken long for him to find the Stanley family, the dad had settled working at University of Southern California as a professor of history and politics. The mom was content to stay home, raise her two kids. Ben had attended USC, then went to Stanford to finish his degree in Psychology. It’s where he met his wife, Helen.

He opened a practice in Reseda, and they bought a small home to raise their family.

Marco kept an eye on the family over the years, the only time he was tempted to reveal himself, was when Helen had passed ten years ago. Ben had seemed to flounder in finding a new reality for life. But he picked up quickly, and settled into semi-retirement.

To be honest Marco didn’t like most of the kids, at least the two oldest boys. They loved their dad, but tried too hard to control his life. Ben was stubborn, and refused to fully retire, though only saw a few patients, and not taking on any new ones. His practice had expanded over the years, and the younger doctors he had brought in were thriving.

He hadn’t checked on him in the past ten years, so had no idea that the youngest child and only daughter returned back to California, bringing Nathan’s namesake. That was one thing he enjoyed telling his Clan Leader, Nathan had smiled and blushed for days over that piece of information.

Marco gave his dad a smile, before heading for the elevators. Niccolo would wait in the lobby, while Marco went upstairs to pick up the duo. His dad knew Marco had more interaction with Ben, and was giving them the time needed for the reunion.

With a deep breath Marco knocked on the door, then blinked when a sixteen year old kid opened the door. He could see Ben in him, the lankiness and long legs. “You must be Nathan.”

“I am.” He gave Marco a suspicious look. “And you are?”

“Marco.”

“I really want to call out Polo right now.” He smiled as he opened the door to let him into the room.

Marco laughed lightly, it wasn’t the first time he heard that, and there were times he wanted to smack Sifu for when he does it when they are out and about. He stepped into the room, seeing the two suitcases neatly organized in the living area.

“Nathan, was that the bell service?” Ben stepped out of the room pausing slightly when he saw Marco standing there. “I don’t think I will get used to seeing everyone the same yet not.”

“Hello Ben.” Marco walked over and gave the man a hug. “It’s good to see you. Though I have to confess I’ve kept an eye on you over the years.”

“Really?” He asked, eyes narrowing slightly. “That’s not creepy at all.”

“On orders from Nathan.” Marco had no problem throwing his Clan Leader under the bus.

“Why didn’t you ever reach out?”

“Nathan didn’t want to bring the trauma of the camps back into your life.” He agreed yet didn’t, with him on the situation, but didn’t push the subject. “I also think he didn’t want to bring back the camps into his life.”

Ben deflated slightly. “I can understand the feeling. I may not agree with it totally, and will have words. I’m not ten anymore so I can argue back.”

“You argued back at ten.” Marco pointed out. “I have a lot of stories to catch you up on, plus I would like to introduce you to my Mate. Though I should tell you up front, Sifu can take some time to get used to, but to let you know, he’s blind.”

“That’s why he was feeling your face.” Ben remembered watching that moment thinking it was odd, but in the whole time they fled to Australia never once did he think the man was blind, he had moved around with such confidence.

“Yes.” Marco gave him a smile. “Father is downstairs waiting.”

Ben nodded and went to grab his suitcase, only to see his grandson had already had everything ready. He just gave him a smile, and gestured towards the door. He knew what battles to fight, and headed for the door. Marco explained more about the history of Shogun, plus some fun stories about a few of the members, including Confucius. Nathan was going to do so well on his history homework.

Niccolo gave Ben a bright smile, a kiss on each cheek. “It is good to see you. Marco has kept us updated on your life.”

“Stalker.” Ben gave a pointed look to the younger … well technically … older man.

Marco winked then headed for the car. “Kensei has rooms set up for the two of you at the Clan Home. Katsumoto will be waiting for us, he just wants to chat before seeing Nathan.”

“I’m sure me turning up has brought back some old memories.” Ben glanced between father and son, noticing how much Niccolo was watching his boy.

“We’ve all had some moments.” Marco admitted. “But seeing you again is worth it. Knowing that you’ve lived a good life, has helped our own healing journeys.”

Ben refused to cry. Well at least not yet. He was sure he was going to cry like a baby the moment he saw Nathan. The ride wasn’t too long, but enough that Marco entertained them about one of the adventures he had gone on with Sifu to Hong Kong, and they both almost got arrested for indecent behavior. Ben was chuckling as each part of the story just got more ridiculous, while his grandson was having a hard time breathing.

The front of the clan home was very undistinguished. Likely the way they liked it. It had very traditional Japanese architecture. The wall was over ten feet high, and the gate was at least twelve. There were two dragon statues at the front, along with the tenets of the Samurai: Gi (Justice), Yu (Courage), Jin (Mercy), Rei (Respect), Makoto (Honesty), Meiyo (Honor), Chugi (Loyalty) and Kokki (Self-Control) carved in wood over the gates.

Marco led them inside, explained their bags would be taken care of. When they entered, the grounds were spectacular. It was everything a Japanese garden should be. On the bridge over a small river, was Daniel and Katsumoto.

Nathan bowed to his Sensei. “I didn’t know you were coming?”

“I figured you could use a familiar face.” Daniel smiled at his student. “Ben, Nathan, this is Shogun’s Clan Leader Katsumoto.”

“I remember you.” Ben bowed slightly remembering what Nathan had taught him. “You scared the shit out of me.”

Katsumoto laughed lightly. “Welcome to our home Ben, along with your grandson, Nathan.”

Nathan did a small bow, and made sure to say the proper greetings in Japanese. He smiled when he noticed the surprised yet proud smiles on his Sensei and grandfather. Katsumoto returned the greeting, with an honored smile.

Daniel reached out to Nathan, taking his elbow. “Let me show you the dojo here, I can introduce you to those who helped train me.”

At first Nathan didn’t want to go, wanted to make sure his grandfather was taken care of, that he was safe. With a nod from his grandpa, he took a step closer to Daniel and let himself be led away.

Ben watched as his grandson was escorted into the main building, then focused back on Katsumoto. “This is all a bit overwhelming.”

“I am glad you have re-entered our lives.” He gestured towards the opposite path Daniel had taken Nathan. “I am sorry it’s taken this long.”

“I’m sure there were more important things than just some ten year old that was underfoot.” Ben shrugged slightly. “I know the memories I have, and Nathan had it much worse.”

“You were more than just a ten year old underfoot.” Katsumoto turned towards him, by his expression and stance he was deadly serious. “It was your presence that kept Nathan together. What happened to him, would have happened with you there or not. It was because of you, he came through it. You helped him in ways I don’t think you understand.”

Ben could only stare, not sure what to say.

“Nathan had Marco keep an eye on you. I know many times he wanted to reach out, but he didn’t want to disturb your life and bring back those moments.”

“That wasn’t his decision to make for me.”

Katsumoto chuckled. “You can yell at him.”

“I will.” Ben nodded following him down a small path that led to a private garden. “Likely after I bawl like a baby.”

“Kensei has made sure there are extra tissues.” Katsumoto opened the gate and led him into a private garden.

It was peaceful. Ben could feel the stress dropping off of him. As he rounded the corner, he came to a stop when he saw Nathan in the middle sitting cross legged, meditating. Ben was sure the choked noise he heard was him, especially when Nathan turned to look at him.

With ease that made Ben cringe, Nathan stood and moved towards him. They were both laughing and crying. No words were spoken, as they held onto each other. He was the taller one now, but he didn’t care. He had no idea how long they stood there, as the tears dried enough Nathan escorted him to one of the benches and the two sat down.

He looked exactly how he remembered him. The hair was a bit longer, better styled the same dark brown hair. His smile was bright, but the most important was the softness in his eyes. The trauma he had seen, and in some ways expected to still see, faded. He looked good in simple jeans and a soft t-shirt.

“God I feel old.” Ben couldn’t help but reach out and touch, then pulled his hand back. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Nathan took his hand in his, studying the strong wrinkled hand. “I am the one who should apologize. I should’ve reached out years ago. I would’ve missed out on this if it wasn’t for Daniel.”

“I also should’ve ignored my mother and sister’s complaints and come to Japan to find you.” Ben had to admit his own fault in such a late reunion. If he had done what he wanted to, and flown to Japan after he graduated. “But maybe it wasn’t meant to be. I don’t know how different my life would’ve been. I had a good life.”

“I hear a great grandkid is in the making.”

Ben laughed lightly. “I’m too young to be a great grandpa!”

Nathan chuckled. “It’s good to see you.”

“There is so much I want to tell you.” Ben leaned against the back of the bench smiling. “So much I want to know. Were all those Samurai stories real?”

“Yes.” Nathan nodded, the grin widening. “The story I told you about the Soldier and the Samurai was exactly how I met Katsumoto.”

“And the dragon?”

Nathan stood, holding out his hand to help Ben up, then led him over to an open section of the garden where a stone statue of a dragon was located. “Mushu we have company.” There was nothing for a few moments. “Mushu!”

The dragon shifted and burst into life, the grey color shifting into vibrant orange and reds. It ran towards them moving around them with ease and delicacy. “Is this him?”

“Yes Mushu, this is Ben.” Nathan glanced at Ben, who was staring at the Dragon in awe. “Ben, this is my dragon, Mushu.”

“When Mulan came out, and I realized the dragon was named Mushu I couldn’t help but laugh. No one in my family understood my excitement over the character. I even found a figurine to put in my office. I pretended it was the same dragon, now watching over me.”

“I liked that movie, though Mulan not my hooman.” Mushu shifted until he sat up to look at Ben. “That dragon is a bit small.” He settled back on his four legs, then curled up into a ball. “I go nap now.” Then ran off into the building.

“He has an oversized dog bed in my office.”

Ben couldn’t help the laughter that escaped. “This is awesome. I can’t wait to show my grandson a dragon.”

“You must tell me all about him.” The two walked towards the building. “I want to hear everything.”

They had been in Japan for two weeks. Long enough that Daniel had kidnapped Nathan, and took him to meet more members of the clan, and get some new training. When he did see his grandson he had collapsed on the bed, with a pained groan. There may have been mumbling about the whole karate kid thing was real and every single one of them were bastards.

Ben had settled into the routine of the clan with ease. He found himself talking with a variety of members, not just those he met in the camps. He was happy, just being around everyone learning so much about Japan, and how the Clan was affected by the war and the changes since then.

Marco had introduced him to Sifu, who promptly took Ben on a walk to show him the butterflies. He knew this was a trap, but went anyway. Then squealed like a little girl when all the butterflies landed on him, he couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day. Nathan, his grandson, as he now had to distinguish between the two, had been pulled into the same trick only to be tricked into learning how to meditate. Nathan had sat there for hours, only to realize that this is what the others had talked about. He admitted grudgingly that it had helped him better understand meditation, but he wanted to see the butterflies.

Shao Jung was adorable.

Ben learned quickly she was deadly, and never ever wanted to mess with her. She adored her Mate, and it was obvious she would do whatever was necessary to keep him happy. When Niccolo explained she had the soul of Kubla Kahn, it all made more sense.

Past lives were a whole new thing he was coming to grips with. After long conversations with Kong Qui about it, he started to see a whole new world. It oddly comforted him that he would come back around. Then had deep conversations with himself that the moment he remembered he would go find Nathan.

Kensei taught him how to cook Japanese food, and he may have fallen in love all over again. He also smacked himself for not coming to Japan sooner, so much he missed out on. The food being one of them.

Daniel introduced him to Yasuke, who was the warrior that had helped the others save them. He was also the Hunter that was putting Nathan through the works. His grandson was going to be an amazing warrior, his cousins were going to get a rude awakening about Karate.

Yasuke introduced him to his Mate, Daniel Taylor. The two had long conversations about war, trauma, and dealing with a variety of mental issues. Taylor was exactly why he went into his occupation, no one had really helped him after Vietnam. It was his friends, then later clan, that gave him the support he needed. Ben wished he could do more, but he was on the far side of his prime, even though he had some good years left – it wasn’t a task for him anymore.

It didn’t take long to notice the security around the house, and anytime Nathan went out he usually had a Hunter with him, though so did Katsumoto. Just watching his grandson training, showcased to Ben that the Clan had established warriors and Nathan himself was a formidable Samurai. One day, while having a quiet meal in Nathan’s office, Ben asked.

“I can’t help but notice that you’re quite the warrior. I mean one doesn’t get the name Red Samurai for just looking good in Red.” Nathan snorted slightly, but had stopped eating, watching Ben intently. “Wales isn’t small, nor is Yasuke. Even Kensei is handy with those kitchen knives. Marco’s walking stick is a deadly weapon, and Niccolo is fast with a small blade. How did they even capture you, let alone why didn’t you leave sooner?”

Nathan sat back in his chair and took a deep breath. “As you likely have noticed there are a lot of Chosen Ones who help run everything. The town is part of the Clan, and mostly everyone there works or is part of the Clan in some ways.” Ben nodded. “As Vampires we are faster, deadlier, and even those that aren’t really fighters are hard to take down.”

He paused for a moment. “The threat is never against us. It’s those around us. The clan doesn’t talk about what happened, because it wasn’t the Japanese army that found and dragged us out. It was members of our own clan, who betrayed us to the Japanese army.”

“Oh dear.” Ben couldn’t imagine the betrayal.

“And they used every single Chosen One, every single human in the area as a way to exploit our weakness. The soldiers knew, we wouldn’t do anything to bring punishment down on those around us.”

Kensei shoved his kitchen staff out the back of the area towards the open fields. “Run. Do not come back.”

“But .. ” One of them hesitated.

“Go.” He slammed the door shut, then moved further into the house, making sure the rest of the staff was fleeing. “Nathan.”

“I got everyone I could out the back.” He stated as he ran by. “I’m trying to get Mushu out.”

“Not leaving!” The dragon refused to budge from his defense position in the main room.

“They can’t see you!” Nathan argued back, shooing the dragon towards the back. Realizing there was no way that was going to work he stopped and made sure to look Mushu in the eyes. “I need you to protect the children.”

Mushu huffed. “Not fair.”

“I know.” He tipped his head until his forehead rested on Mushu’s snout. “I know you want to burn them all down, but I need you protected and someone has to tell Katsumoto what has happened here.”

“Betrayers will die.”

“I’m sure you will hunt each and every one of them down.”

Mushu growled, then scurried out the back. He rushed through the fields herding all of the chosen ones. When they heard shots fired, Nathan ran to the porch to see Mushu’s spikes and armour click into place as he grew twice his size roaring at the soldiers. With a last look towards Nathan, he set the field on fire and flew off.

Nathan grinned as he was dragged out of the house, toward the waiting soldiers and trucks. The betrayers were standing there, smirking at the captive Westerners.

One of them walked over to Nathan and pulled on his long hair. He had grown it out since he Mated with Katsumoto. He refused to give them any satisfaction as they chopped it off and let it fall to the ground. “You do not deserve the title of Samurai.”

“He has your scent.” Nathan looked at them as the soldiers yanked him towards the waiting trucks. “He knows who betrayed us.”

Wales cursed them, spitting on one as he was dragged behind Nathan.

Kensei walked with dignity, refusing to even acknowledge the betrayers.

Marco rushed forward only to get hit with the but of a soldiers’ guns, he went down to his knees cursing them all in Italian. Niccolo helped his son up, and in the one second no one was looking, grabbed one of the betrayer’s knives and gutted him with it. “You are marked for death.”

“The soldiers knew to keep us with humans. It’s likely why they kept you with your father, instead of sending you with the women and children.” Nathan finished the tale. “The Commander knew we couldn’t fight with so many vulnerable men around us.”

“And I was the perfect tool to keep you under control.”

He nodded, refusing to lie. “But he never realized you grounded me. That you kept me going, until Katsumoto arrived.”

Ben wiped a few of the tears from his cheeks. “Can I see the Red Samurai?”

“Of course.”

Kensei stared at Nathan in shock. “What?”

“Ben, he had decided to retire here.” Nathan repeated his previous comment. “We’re going to need to fix a more permanent room, and you might as well add one for his grandson, as the boy is trying to figure out how to transfer schools.”

“I doubt that would work.” He answered absentmindedly.

“The rate things are going, he’ll be on a plane the moment he gets his highschool diploma.” Nathan paused as he studied the Clan’s Caretaker. “What?”

“What?”

“You’re acting weird, and don’t seem happy about Ben staying. I know it’s going to be hard to lose him, but at least we’ll have this time.”

Kensei ran a hand through his blonde hair, then took a deep breath as if coming to a very hard decision. With a glance around the room, he grabbed Nathan and dragged him to the Caretaker’s office. Nathan stayed quiet as the door was slammed shut and Kensei stared at him with a look of utter defeat.

“Oh fuck me.” Nathan figured it out in seconds. “Why the hell didn’t you tell anyone!?”

“He was a kid!” Kensei argued back.

“70 Years ago.” He hissed hand gesturing outwards. “All that time Marco went to check on him, you never mentioned it.”

“He was married, with kids, happy with his life.” His voice cracked showing the emotion that was pouring out of him. “When Katsumoto said he was coming, I thought it would be fine, that I would see him for a few weeks, then let him go. I would hold those memories precious so when he returns, I can tell him.”

“You have to tell him.”

Kensei looked at him like he was a moron. “Hell no.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed in response. “He has the right to know. He knows about Mates, has talked with many of us about our Mates.”

“Did you miss that he’s 80 years old?”

“And?” One of Nathan’s eyebrows raised, as he gave him a flat look. “He’s healthy for his age, very agile, and sharp, not the first Vampire who is over the age of retirement. I didn’t think age would matter.”

“How is he going to feel about that?” Kensei argued about him. “Let alone physical aspects of a relationship.”

“You would have to ask him.” Nathan pointed out, but his voice softened. “Are you having a problem with the age? I mean it would be something to adjust to.”

“No. Not really. He’s handsome, and truthfully he looks more like he’s in his sixties. I mean Imenand looks older.” Kensei admitted. “You know sex isn’t always important to me, I like it and well we would figure out how to make it work. Not like questions or concerns we couldn’t talk to Lady Blossom.”

“Sex isn’t always the important part of the relationship either.” Nathan added to the conversation, knowing Paul was Asexual, and had two Mates that were in the sex trade, yet they made it work. “Kensei, you have to tell him. He would be hurt, then pissed he was left in the dark.”

The Caretaker sighed heavily. “Fine. Will you be there?”

“Yes.” He patted the man’s shoulder. “Let’s just get this over with, before too many decisions are made.”

With a small nod, the two left the office and headed out to the gardens where Ben usually spent the afternoons. He had taken to meditation easily, and found that specific garden relaxing. Today they found him working on a laptop, as he was figuring out logistics and paperwork on moving to Japan. The lawyers from Shogun and Sylum were helping out with the legal side of things.

Ben looked up and smiled. “Carol is coming next week. My boys are pissed, but they can get over it. I’ll likely have to go back to LA to get a few things taken care of, but it shouldn’t take too long.” He paused looking between the two. “Okay what’s going on?”

Kensei sat next to him, took a deep breath. “I have something you need to know.”

He glanced over at Nathan, then focused on Kensei. “Okay. I’m listening.” He made sure to close the laptop and set it down, so his sole focus was on what was being said.

“There was a reason I was more aloof with you when we were in the camp.” Ben wanted to let him know he never really noticed it, and the few times Kensei would move to another area, as a kid he figured he was shy. He tried not to fidget as the pause went longer than expected. “There is only one way to say this. You are my Mate. I avoided you, because you were a kid. Then as Marco told us about your life, I resigned myself to losing you. I never expected to see you again.”

“What?” Ben glanced over to Nathan who nodded slightly. “What does that mean?”

“It means you were meant for me.” He gave him a soft smile. “But the world is not a nice place.”

Ben looked down at his hands, seeing the age and wrinkles on them. “I’m old.”

“I’m over 400 years old.” Kensei pointed with a small smile.

“It’s different and you know it.” Ben wasn’t quite sure what to say. “Thank you for telling me, you could’ve not said a word … ” He paused at Kensei’s look at Nathan. “We’ll discuss that later.”

There was a small chuckle. “Ben, do you want to talk about it?”

“There are only two options.” He glanced between them. “I’m turned at the age I’m at, and all that goes with it. Or I retire, live the rest of my life out here and you wait for me to return.”

“It’s your decision.” Nathan assured him.

Ben looked between the two men. “I want to think about this, and if possible talk to others.”

“We can arrange that.”

He nodded absentmindedly then stood up, he grabbed his laptop then turned towards Kensei. “And I want a date. If I’m going to do this, or even think about it. I want to see how this would work.”

Kensei smiled, laughing slightly. “I’ll fix us a date.”

Ben nodded, then wandered down the path towards his rooms. “That went better than I thought it would.”

Nathan patted his shoulder. “I would contact Bert, he should be the first one to talk with him.”

It was likely Ben’s family line came down through Bert. “I don’t know if I’m more worried he would say yes or no.”

“Both.” Nathan gave him an encouraging smile, then headed for his office. All they can do now is wait for Ben’s decision.

To be continued …

After The Credits Scene

Daniel eased out of the car with a small groan. The trip to Okinawa was a long tedious trip of driving, ferries and boats. But it was worth it. He glanced over to see his student get out of the car and stretch, then bounce on his toes.

Youth.

Did he ever have that much energy?

Daniel gave Nathan a smile, then headed towards the small house. Out front were many old style cars, most of them needed waxing, and likely repaired. That could be a task for his student.

Nathan didn’t ask many questions, he knew his grandfather was dealing with issues and when Daniel suggested he show him Okinawa and the town Miyagi was from, he took the opportunity.

“So why are we here?” Nathan asked as they walked towards the porch. “Or more should I ask where we are?”

“What I’m about to tell you, you can’t talk about. Not even to Ben.” Daniel paused at the doorway.

Nathan paused. “I don’t like lying to him.”

“I doubt he would even ask, please.”

With a nod of agreement, the two walked into the house, then into the back through the garden into a very familiar dojo. “It looks just like yours.”

“This is the one I based it on.” Daniel smiled as he felt at home. “Miyagi!”

“I hear you.” An older Japanese man stepped out from behind one of the walls. “You have brought a student.”

Nathan bowed. “I have heard so much about you.”

“All lies I’m sure.” Miyagi laughed then gave Daniel a hug. “What brings you here?”

“I wanted him to meet you.” Daniel gave him a smile.

“He knows?”

“Not all of it.” Daniel admitted then focused back on his student. “Miyagi is my Mate, but no one knows. You see, for the Vampire world, he died back in 2005, there was an incident involving a Clan Leader, who had been taken. All very dramatic.”

“I fell in battle.” Miyagi stated. “Literally fell. Was overrun by the enemy. By the time I pulled myself out of the situation, I was declared dead. I took the opportunity for retirement from the Council. Went back to Los Angeles, to tell Daniel everything. I’ve been hiding here ever since.”

Nathan’s eyes went wide. “So you basically faked your Vampire death to retire?”

Daniel laughed. “I tell everyone he Turned me, just before he died, when in reality it was ‘after’.”

“What happens if they find out?” He couldn’t help but find the story hilarious, and though he wanted to tell his grandpa, he would keep his word and not say a thing.

Miyagi shrugged. “What will they do, fire me?” He gave Nathan a critical once over. “Show me what you got.”
