Tough question. Personally, I have to let the two entities stand on their own. If I don’t I’m always disappointed in the movie because movies don’t show the characters thoughts like the written word.
For example: Stephen King. If you’ve read the book then watch the movie it can be disappointing because so much of what King writes is in the mind. I solved that by watching the movie before reading the book. I’m leery of watching The Dark Tower since I’ve read the series.
Last question first, because it’s easiest – Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series. It’s a modern fantasy series with werewolves, vampires, witches and shapeshifters, and the protagonist is a Native American woman who turns into a coyote and has narration snarky enough to make Speed proud. I almost submitted Mercy into the character auditions for Sylum but I thought she might have to lose the coyote thing and it’s too important for reasons that would spoil the books if I explained. If you haven’t read them yet, I heartily recommend those and the Alpha & Omega series, which are set in the same universe.
Movies better than the books they were based off – Shawshank Redemption, Jaws, Princess Bride, Jurassic Park, and Blade Runner (which even Philip K Dick loved).
Books better than the movie – uhm, almost all of them? The biggest example I can think of offhand is The Scarlet Letter. The 1995 movie has Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and Robert Duvall in it, but trust me, if you haven’t seen it, don’t. Just don’t. Ever. They made me watch it in one of my high school English classes and I’m still traumatized two decades later.
My FAVORITE movie adaptation of a book is a really hard question. But top three? Princess Bride, Shawshank, and Blade Runner.
My favorite book to movie adaptation was Vampire Academy. It wasn’t perfect but I loved what they changed and how much it was obvious that the actors really cared about their characters and wanted to get it right. It is a good little series and a great little movie even if it didn’t do to well so they sadly aren’t making more.
Blood and Chocolate. If there was an award for fucking up and book when making it into a movie it would have to go to Blood and Chocolate. I *loved* the book so much and I was super excited when the movie was announced but then when I went to go see it I was devastated. The only thing that was the same from the book to the movie is the characters names. The setting is different, the plot is different, and even the characters are different. They took a great story about accepting who you are and learning to love it and they made that crappy, crappy movie and I am still not over it at all. I will most likely never be over it because that is one of my favorite books ever and it deserved so much better.
As for movie adaptations that are better then the book I do not really know of any but I do know of a TV show adaptation that is waaaaay better then the books. The Mortal Instruments became a Freeform series called Shadowhunters and Shadowhunters is way better then the TMI books or the TMI movie they made. I could be here for days talking about why the series is better (more diverse characters, better storylines, ect ect.) but I’ll just stick with my top five reasons instead. The first one is the main LGBT relationship only ever seemed to get screentime in the books when they where fighting but in the show we get to see so much more. Plus it is nice to see a canon Bisexual and a canon homosexual in a loving relationship where they both have positions of power among their people and so they have to navigate that and their relationship. The second is the positive female friendships and positive male friendships in the books and instead of the books where Izzy and Clary hated each other for no real reason. Jace only ever seemed to want Alec (his legit soulmate) around when he wanted things and often neglected or belittled him but in the show there’s entire episodes dedicated to them and just how far they will go for each other. The third is the characters are aged up so it actually makes sense and it’s not 4 teenagers trying to save NY but instead they have actual people behind them who work with them. Fourth is the highlight abuse victims seem to get in this. Instead of it being their fault they are actually given stories where they don’t magically get better and no one expects them to it’s a one day at a time thing. Finally males are allowed to cry and be venerable and break down and it’s not seen as them being weak at all. Rather the people who love them are there for them and reassure them and that’s great. It’s not that Shadowhunters is perfect (sometimes I hate it) but it is really good if you can get past some of the camp that is S1. S2 they really found their footing and since S1 was so popular they got more of that crazy Disney Money.
Also in general I think Freeform has been putting out some pretty awesome show so If you’ve been sleeping on them you might wanna look them up. They have been doing what the CW wanted to do (be a relevant and fun and fresh network for teens/young adults) way better then the CW ever did and that’s really impressive since they had to ditch the family friendly ABC family vibe before they could do anything else.
I would love to see The Belgariad as a movie franchise or really just any of David Eddings’ books. He takes you on an adventure every time and I just love it so much. The richness of his worlds and his characters is something truly amazing. Also I’d love to see a Hawkeye movie but I highly doubt that is ever gonna happen sadly.
Q: So what is your favorite best movie adaptation from a book?
A: Rebels. The book made cry, but the movie… Oh, boy!!!! The deaths of Johnny Cake and Dallas? Hearth breaking. At last for me.
Q: Which book was better than the movie?
A: Let me think… all ecxept The Princess Bride. Don’t let me start on the disaster that was Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat!!! UFFF!!! What the…. I’m Spanish and I love Antonio Banderas, but him as Armand??? And Tom Cruise as Lestat?!!! Pleeeease!!! Urk! I won’t say a word about the sequel or I will start crying.
Q: Which movie was actually better than the book?
A: The Princess Bride without the slightest doubt!! Mandy Patinkin was fantastic as Iñigo.
Q:What book series would you love to see as a movie?
A: The Nightrunner serie by Lynn Flewelling or The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny because I love fantasy and maybe The chatch trap by Marion Zimmer Bradley because when I go to the circus I love the trapeze acts.

Actually the movie for Dart Tower takes place timeline wise after the books so that is different than some
Good. I’ll have to haul hubby to the movies. He had the same reservations.
LOL I didn’t even know there was a Dark Tower movie! I loved those books.

Yes, Princess Bride immediately sprang to mind!
This is a really good one!

I haven’t seen or read Vampire Diaries or Blood and Chocolate, but I am with you 100% on Shadowhunters, and I love all things David Eddings.
