William Marshal<\/a>, 1st Earl of Pembroke, also called William the Marshal\u00a0(Norman French:\u00a0Williame li Mareschal<\/span>,\u00a0 French:\u00a0Guillaume le Mar\u00e9chal<\/span>), was an\u00a0Anglo-Norman\u00a0soldier and statesman. He served five English kings\u2014Henry II, his sons\u00a0the \u201cYoung King\u201d Henry,\u00a0Richard I, and\u00a0John, and finally John\u2019s son\u00a0Henry III.<\/span><\/p>\n

Knighted\u00a0in 1166, he spent his younger years as a\u00a0knight errant\u00a0and a successful\u00a0tournament\u00a0competitor;\u00a0Stephen Langton eulogized him as the \u201cbest knight that ever lived.\u201d In 1189, he became the de facto\u00a0earl of Pembroke\u00a0through his marriage to\u00a0Isabel de Clare\u00a0whose Mother was\u00a0Aoife MacMurrough\u00a0and father was\u00a0Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, though the title of earl was not officially granted until 1199 during the second creation of the\u00a0Pembroke earldom. In 1216, he was appointed protector for the nine-year-old Henry III, and\u00a0regent\u00a0of the kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before him, his father\u2019s family held a hereditary title of Marshal to the king, which by his father\u2019s time had become recognized as a chief or master Marshalcy, involving management over other Marshals and functionaries. William became known as \u201cthe Marshal\u201d, although by his time much of the function was delegated to more specialized representatives (as happened with other functions in the King\u2019s household). Because he was an earl, and also known as the marshal, the term \u201cearl marshal\u201d was commonly used and this later became an established hereditary title in the English peerage.<\/span><\/p>\n
