Enjoying the quiet spring morning, Templeton Peck leisurely strolled toward the O\u2019Malley Bar. After the frenetic energy of Mardi Gras season, the relative calm of the Lenten and Easter season was a welcome change. He stopped at his favorite caf\u00e9 for a cup of coffee and order of beignets. Murdock was gone on an early morning flight, necessitating a pre-breakfast trip to the airfield. <\/span><\/p>\n

Getting a second cup of coffee to go, he felt fortified enough to face the stack of work sitting on his desk. Slipping in the back door of the bar he owned with Murdock, Templeton stopped long enough for a quick chat with his manager before heading up the stairs to his office. His assistant greeted him with a smile and a stack of messages.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlready?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can I say, you\u2019re a bastion of the city. The mayor and city council don\u2019t want to do anything that will cause you to give them your, <\/span>I\u2019m so disappointed in your stupidity,<\/span><\/i> face.\u201d The well-dressed, brunette with eyes the color of his favorite dark chocolate, smirked. <\/span><\/p>\n

His executive assistant always reminded Templeton of Katherine Hepburn in looks and demeanor. Beatrice \u2026 Do NOT call me Bea, Avery had been Templeton\u2019s right hand for fifteen years, making his life imminently easier. While she guarded the entrance to his office as fiercely as any dragon, she treated Templeton and H.M. like favored uncles. Members of her family had been Chosen Ones since the pair had joined Sylum and settled in New Orleans. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch disrespect for our elected officials.\u201d Templeton scolded as he headed for his office. \u201cHave you found yourself a minion, yet?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDwight\u2019s running background checks for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou do realize the Clan members in the NOLA police department are not your minions?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe always said if I needed anything to let him know.\u201d She smiled impishly as she waved him on his way. <\/span><\/p>\n

~ \u2022 ~ \u2022 ~<\/span><\/p>\n

Beatrice had gone home by the time H.M. returned from the airfield. Still riding the adrenaline high his Mate always got from flying, Templeton encouraged Murdock and Billy to stretch out with him on the couch and tell him about their trip. As Murdock got to the part about his landing and post-trip, he finally began to wind down. He was silent for several minutes before he reached up and grabbed a quick kiss from his Mate and bounded off the couch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCome on. I need to let <\/span>Billy<\/span><\/i> out in the garden, and there\u2019s the wonderful smell of crawfish etouffee wafting on the wind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s the Special downstairs tonight.\u201d Templeton moved around his office to shut it down for the night. <\/span><\/p>\n

While Murdock walked <\/span>Billy<\/span><\/i>, Templeton headed for their usual table and to check for anything happening in the bar that might be a trigger for his Mate. He paused for a minute \u2026 There was something \u2026 A feeling \u2026 He looked around the bar. The back section of the bar that used to be several private meeting rooms Templeton had converted into one room everyone called <\/span>The Vets Room,<\/span><\/i> was fairly crowded. Being Tuesday, he saw a lot of the regulars, veterans that showed up for veterans\u2019 specials they ran every Tuesday. <\/span><\/p>\n

Having a relaxed atmosphere where they could have a beer, talk, not talk, share stories from their time in service seemed to be a help to many of the younger veterans that were having trouble getting scheduled into the mainstream veterans\u2019 facilities. Templeton would forever be grateful for the time Domenico de Rossi spent working with him after Vietnam, but sometimes having a fellow brother or sister in arms who\u2019d been there, done that, worked almost as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wondering what was taking Murdoc so long to walk <\/span>Billy<\/span><\/i>, he looked toward the hallway that led to the back door. He saw his Mate talking to their Clan\u2019s Second-in-Command. Antonio didn\u2019t often come to the O\u2019Malley Bar. He preferred the high energy at Warrick\u2019s club, The Pirate Cove. O\u2019Malley\u2019s was more neighborhood bar than club. Confused, his gaze flicked over the waitress that carried a tray of pitchers into the <\/span>Vets Room.<\/span><\/i> That\u2019s when he saw Nicolaus talking to Templeton\u2019s Sire, Hannibal King, and his Mate, Don Flack \u2026 And what were they doing in town?<\/span><\/p>\n

Before he could ask any of these questions, the crowd moved toward the glasses and pitchers of beer. It was then he saw the impromptu shrine on one of the tables that had been shoved into the corner. There were bits and bobs, pieces of notebook paper torn from the notebook laying on another table, pictures, and miscellaneous things that Templeton couldn\u2019t begin to name. Seeing Hannibal coming towards him trailed by Don, he couldn\u2019t hold his questions any longer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you two doing here? Won\u2019t New York fall into the harbor without you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHello to you, too.\u201d Hannibal pulled his stubborn Childe into a hug. \u201cMurdock called me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now he was really confused. \u201cWhy would Murdock call you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s my friend and son-in-law.\u201d Hannibal snarked while Don tried not to laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not what meant.\u201d Templeton was becoming frustrated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe called and invited us to a <\/span>Rockpile<\/span><\/i> party. The only thing I know by that name was Chang\u2019s camp in \u2018Nam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would he \u2026?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think I can answer that.\u201d Don handed Templeton his phone. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNational Former Prisoner Of War Recognition Day?\u201d Now Templeton was confused.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously.\u201d Hannibal ran his hand through his hair. \u201cIt looks like he invited all of New Orleans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTemp \u2026 Temp \u2026 What do you think of my and <\/span>Billy\u2019s<\/span><\/i> surprise?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great, Sweetheart.\u201d Templeton assured his Mate. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tonight\u2019s on us. Food, drinks, we paid for everything.\u201d Murdock leaned into Templeton\u2019s side, laying his head on his shoulder. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Hannibal and Don are a nice surprise.\u201d He looked down at his Mate\u2019s feet. \u201cThank you, <\/span>Billy<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut \u2026\u201d Don started but Hannibal grabbed his hand. \u201cWe were just on our way to get some of that crawfish etouffee H.M. said was on Special.\u201d He pulled his Mate toward the bar before Don could say something about nothing sitting at Murdock’s feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBest in New Orleans.\u201d The pilot called after the men as he straightened. \u201cWe were supposed to get some, too.\u201d He grabbed one of Templeton\u2019s hands in both of his. \u201cYou go save <\/span>our<\/span><\/i> table and I\u2019ll get dinner.\u201d He danced toward the kitchen. <\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing his Mate would be a few minutes because he always got distracted, Templeton made the rounds to speak to his Clan leaders and a few others before he made it to <\/span>their <\/span><\/i>table setting where Murdock\u2019s back would be to the back wall that would keep anyone from bumping him from behind. <\/span><\/p>\n

Keeping one eye on the patrons while enjoying his dinner, Templeton grabbed Murdock\u2019s hand before he could jump up and run to the kitchen for dessert. \u201cH.M.\u201d He said quietly so he had his Mate\u2019s full attention. \u201cThank you. This was very thoughtful of you to get all our friends and brothers and sisters in arms together today, but you don\u2019t usually go all out like this. What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Murdock wrapped his hands around Templeton\u2019s. \u201c<\/span>Billy<\/span><\/i> and I were talking on the way home last week and he said that we get so wrapped up in where we are that we forget where we came from. If you think about it, when we met, we were in the worst place anyone could ever be \u2026 First in a war zone and then in a prison camp, and I almost lost you again. Even with <\/span>Billy\u2019s<\/span><\/i> help, there was no way I would have survived if you died. Then we escaped and life has been good, but I don\u2019t ever want to forget we did the hard part first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With a soft smile, Templeton pulled his Mate close. He rested his forehead against Murdock\u2019s. He gave him a soft kiss on the lips before turning him lose before he got anxious. \u00a0\u201cI love you, too.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
